In June 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.2% over one month, after ‑0.1% in May. The prices of energy were almost stable (+0.1% after ‑3.0% in May), with a slight rebound in petroleum product prices (+0.3% after ‑5.9%). The prices of food increased at the same rate than in the previous month (+0.3%) and those of manufactured goods remained almost stable (+0.1% after +0.0%). The prices of services decelerated slightly (+0.2% after +0.3%) linked with the decline in communication service prices (‑3.0% after +0.2%) and the smaller rise in those of “other services” (+0.4% after +0.6%).
Seasonally adjusted, consumer prices were stable in June 2023, after ‑0.2% in May.
Year on year, consumer prices grew by 4.5% in June 2023, after +5.1% in May. This decrease in inflation resulted from a year-on-year decline in energy prices (‑3.0% after +2.0%), and from a slowdown in food prices (+13.7% after +14.3%). The prices of services increased at the same rate than in the previous month (+3.0%), as those of tobacco (+9.8%), while the prices of manufactured goods accelerated slightly (+4.2% after +4.1%).
Smaller core inflation year on year
Year on year, core inflation decreased, reaching 5.7% in June 2023, after +5.8% in May.
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 0.2% in June 2023 over one month, after ‑0.1% in the previous month; year on year, it increased by 5.3%, after +6.0% in May.

Decrease in energy prices year on year
Year on year, the prices of energy decreased by 3.0% in June 2023, after +2.0% in May. The decline in petroleum product prices was more marked than in the previous month (‑17.2% after ‑9.7%) due to a “base effect” (they had soared in June 2022): the prices of diesel dropped again (‑18.8% after ‑11.3%), as those of petrol (‑11,3% after ‑2.4%) and liquid fuel (‑30.7% after ‑24.6%). The prices of solid fuel slowed down (+28.7% after +32.9%), as those of electricity (+10.1% after +11.3%), while those of gas accelerated slightly (+22.0% after +21.6%).
Slowdown in food prices year on year
Year on year, food prices rose by 13.7% in June 2023, after +14.3% in May. Excluding fresh products, food prices slowed down for the second month in a row (+14.1% after +14.9%). The increase in prices softened for bread and cereals (+14.1% after +14.8%), meat (+11.9% after +13.4%), milk, cheese and eggs (+19.8% after +20.7%), oils and fats (+15.9% after +20.3%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (+16.3% after +16.8%) and non-alcoholic beverages (+13.6% after +13.9%). On the contrary, the prices of alcoholic beverages accelerated slightly (+8.8% after +8.7%). The prices of fresh products increased at a brisker rate in June 2023 (+11.2% after +10.7% in May), due to the acceleration in fresh fruits prices (+9.0% after +7.0%). Contrariwise, those of fresh vegetables (+17.0% after +18.0%) and fresh fish (+3.4% after +4.9%) slowed down.

Steady inflation in services year on year
Year on year, service prices rose by 3.0% in June 2023, the same rate than in the previous month. The prices of “other services” accelerated (+4.0% after +3.7%): on the one hand, those of insurance services (+3.6% after +1.8%), social protection services (+4.5% after +4.3%) and accommodation services (+5.1% after +4.8%) accelerated, and on the other hand the decrease in the recreational and cultural services softened (‑6.2% after ‑6.8%). Contrariwise, the prices in catering services (+5.6% after +5.8%), in maintenance and repair of the dwelling services (+5.4% after +5.8%) and personal transport equipment (+8.0% after +8.7%) slowed down. The prices of housing-related services accelerated slightly (+2.8% after +2.7%). Those of transport services slowed down (+6.0% after +8.0%), notably airfares (+9.9% after +16.3%), transport by road (+4.7% after +6.3%) and transport by train (+8.5% after +8.7%). Finally, the prices of health services declined at a rate close to that of the previous month (‑0.6% after ‑0.5%) and the decrease in communication service prices accentuated (‑4.2% after ‑1.3%).
Slight acceleration in manufactured good prices year on year
Year on year, manufactured good prices increased by 4.2% in June 2023, after +4.1% in May. The prices of clothing and footwear increased at a brisker rate than in the previous month (+4.9% after +2.6%), notably due to a lag in the calendar of the summer sales, which started on 28 June in 2023 and on 22 June in 2022. The prices of “other manufactured goods” slowed down (+5.3% after +5.6%), notably those of furniture and furnishings (+5.9% after +7.3%), major household appliances (+2.4% after +2.6%), glassware, tableware and household utensils (+8.6% after +9.1%), vehicles (+4.1% after +4.6%) and articles and products for personal care (+9.5% after +9.6%). Contrariwise, the prices of equipment for sport increased (+3.9% after +3.1%), as those of garden products, plants and flowers (+6.2% after +4.7%). Finally, the prices of health products decreased at a rate close to that of the previous month (-0.7% after -0.6%).
