The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

In April 2023, the volume of sales in trade kept decreasing over a month (‑1.2% after ‑0.6% in March).

In April 2023, the sales volume went down in the three main trade sectors

In April 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased again (‑1.1% over a month after ‑1.3% in March). This drop was largely due to the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (‑3.2% after ‑2.7%), the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑1.6% after ‑2.4%) and food, beverages and tobacco (‑1.4% after ‑1.5%).

The volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased markedly in April 2023 (‑1.5%) after a virtual stability in March (‑0.1%). It went down both in retail trade not in stores (‑5.1% after +5.3%), in non-specialised stores (‑1.4% after ‑0.9%), and in specialised stores (‑0.8% after ‑0.5%). Within the latter, the drop was particularly pronounced in automotive fuel (‑9.0% after +5.2%) and food, beverages and tobacco (‑3.0% after ‑0.6%). Conversely, the volume of sales bounced back in the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +0.9% after ‑1.1%), and in the cultural and recreation goods (+2.8% after ‑3.9%).

Lastly, the volume of sales decreased in April 2023 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.8% after +0.6% in March).

Early retail trade estimate for May 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased again in May 2023 (‑0.8% over a month). From March to May 2023, it would be 3.2% lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.

From February to April 2023, the volume of sales decreased compared to the same three months a year before (‑2.0%)

The volume of sales of the three months under review (February to April 2023) in overall trade was 2.0% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased both in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑3.8%) and in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑2.3%). In contrast, it grew significantly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+6.9%). Within retail trade, the year-on-year volume of sales decreased markedly in non-specialised stores (‑4.9%) and more moderately in specialised stores (‑0.7%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑2.2%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in March 2023 is unchanged at ‑0.6% (after rounding), compared to the previous release.
