Between the end of December 2022 and the end of March 2023, private payroll employment grew moderately again: +0.2% (or +42,000 net job creations) after +0.2% in Q4 2022 (+44,400 jobs). It has grown for the ninth consecutive quarter. Private payroll employment exceeded its Q1 2022 level by +1.3% (+271,100 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.8% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

In Q1 2023, private payroll employment increased by 0.2% as in the previous quarter

Between the end of December 2022 and the end of March 2023, private payroll employment grew moderately again: +0.2% (or +42,000 net job creations) after +0.2% in Q4 2022 (+44,400 jobs). It has grown for the ninth consecutive quarter. Private payroll employment exceeded its Q1 2022 level by +1.3% (+271,100 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +5.8% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

Temporary employment sharply downturned

In Q1 2023, temporary employment decreased sharply: -2.6% (or -21,400 jobs). This decline fully compensated the rises of the last two quarters: +1.1% in Q4 2022 (that is +8,600 jobs) after +1.5% in Q3 2022 (that is +11,700 jobs). Temporary employment was below its Q1 2022 level by 2.4% but above its pre-sanitary crisis level by +1.9%.

As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll increased significantly in services

Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was stable in the first quarter of 2023 after +0.2% in the previous quarter. It toped its Q1 2022 level by 1.0% (+31,500 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q4 2021, it exceeded it by +1.5% (+48,100 net job creations since the end of 2019).

In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased by 0.2% in Q1 2023 (-3,200 jobs). It has been the first quarter of decrease since Q4 2016. Yet, it exceeded its previous year level by +0.2% (that is +3,600 jobs) and its pre-sanitary level by +7.6% (+111,600 jobs compared to the end of 2019).

In market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) accelerated in Q1 2023: +0.5% after +0.1% in Q4 2022 (or +57,400 after +17,700 jobs). It topped its Q1 2022 level (+1.9% or +232,700 jobs) and its pre-sanitary level (+7.2% compared to the end of 2019 or +831,200 jobs).

In non-market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) accelerated in Q1 2023: +0.4% (or +9,900 jobs) after a stability in Q4 2022 (0.0%, that is +1,300 jobs). It was above its Q1 2022 level by 0.9% (or +24,800 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 4.9% (or +128,000 jobs).
