Over a month, output fell back in most industries
In March 2023, output fell back over a month in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑1.1% after +0.5%). It plummeted substantially in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (‑45.6% after +0.8%) due to the strikes in the refineries. Output also declined in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑1.2% after +2.3%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑0.9% after +0.6%) and more slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.2% after +1.5%). On the contrary, output increased again in the manufacture of transport equipment (+0.2% after +5.5%): it was up in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+0.9% after +3.1%) but it decreased in the manufacture of other transport equipment (‑0.4% after +7.3%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased by 0.5%
In the manufacturing industry, output of the first quarter of 2023 was 0.5% higher than that of the first quarter of 2022. Conversely, it was slightly lower in the whole industry (‑0.5%).
Over this one-year period, output went down in the “other manufacturing” industries (‑2.2%). It decreased sharply in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑6.2%), mainly because of the drop in electricity production. It decreased also in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑3.2%). On the contrary, output expanded markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+14.8%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+24.1%), less impacted than last year by supply difficulties for electronic components. Finally, it went up in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.0%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+3.5%).
Over a year, output declined sharply in some energy-intensive industries
In the context of rising electricity and gas prices, energy-intensive industries are particularly exposed to rising production costs, which may affect their output. Output of the first quarter of 2023 was thus down sharply compared to that of the first quarter of 2022 in the manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (‑22.9%), the manufacture of pulp, paper and paperboard (‑25.5%) and the manufacture of basic chemicals (‑18.6%).
