In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In February 2023, output in services fell back slightly over one month (‑0.2%), after a marked increase in January (+1.6%).

Over one month, output was down due in particular to transportation and storage

In February 2023, output fell back sharply in transportation and storage (‑2.9% after +3.0%) where all the sub-sectors were down, as well as in arts, entertainment and recreation (‑2.0% after +5.9%). It contracted less sharply in professional, scientific and technical activities (‑0.7% after +2.2%), and fell slightly in information-communication (‑0.2% after +0.2%). On the contrary, it accelerated in administrative and support service activities (+1.5% after +0.7%), real estate activities (+2.5% after +2.1%) and – albeit very slightly – in accommodation and food service activities (+0.5% after +0.3%).

Over a year, output was up substantially (+7.3%)

Output for the last three months (December 2022 to February 2023) was up markedly (+7.3%) compared to that of the same months a year earlier. It increased notably in professional, scientific and technical activities (+6.7%), information-communication (+8.9%) and more strongly in accommodation and food service activities (+17.3%) and in arts, entertainment and recreation (+21.8%) due in particular to the low activity level a year before because of the health crisis (Omicron wave). Output also increased, but less sharply, in administrative and support service activities (+4.0%), transportation and storage (+2.6%) and real estate activities (+3.8%).

Revisions

Compared to the previous release, the month-on-month percentage change in the index of services output in January 2023 is left unchanged at +1.6% after rounding.
