In January 2023, the volume of sales in trade bounced back over a month (+0.6%) after a fall in December 2022 (‑1.0%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In January 2023, the volume of sales in trade bounced back over a month (+0.6%) after a fall in December 2022 (‑1.0%).
In January 2023, the sales volume increased over a month in the three main trade sectors
In January 2023, the volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles picked up (+0.9% after ‑0.8% in December 2022), both in specialised stores (+1.1% after ‑1.0%) and in non-specialised stores (+0.8% after ‑0.7%). It was stable in retail trade not in stores (0.0% after ‑0.6%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales bounced back in all sub-sectors, with the exception of automotive fuel (‑0.4% after ‑0.5%). The rebound was particularly pronounced in the “other household equipment” (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +3.4% after ‑2.7%).
The volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased in January 2023 (+0.4% after ‑1.2% in December 2022), especially in the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (+3.1% after ‑3.0%). It kept falling in the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑2.1% after ‑2.0%).
Lastly, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles also bounced back in January 2023 (+0.6%), after a fall in December 2022 (‑0.4%).
Early retail trade estimate for February 2023
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in February 2023 (‑1.5%). From December 2022 to February 2023, it would be 1.8% lower than in the same three months a year earlier.

From November 2022 to January 2023, the volume of sales decreased compared to the same three months a year before (‑0.3%)
The volume of sales of the three months under review (November 2022 to January 2023) in overall trade went down (‑0.3%) compared to that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased both in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.2%), and in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.4%). In contrast, it grew in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.9%). Within retail trade, the year-on-year volume of sales fell significantly in non-specialised stores (‑3.3%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑3.6%), while it went up in specialised stores (+0.6%).
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in December 2022 has been revised upwards to ‑1.0% (after rounding), instead of ‑1.2% as initially published.
