In February 2023, the prices of oil in euros increased slightly (+0.9% after +0.1% in January). The prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) slowed down (+1.3% after +1.9%): those of industrial raw materials edged down (‑0.3% after +3.8%) and those of food commodities accelerated (+2.8% after +0.3%).

The weights of non-energy commodity indices have been updated with import data for 2022, resulting in revisions of these indices for January 2023 (see the methodology note attached to this publication). Furthermore, as part of the improvement in the monitoring of raw material prices, the prices of steel scrap, paper pulp and rubber have been replaced by sources that are better suited to this monthly publication than those used previously. This leads to slight revisions of the aggregate index series.

Oil prices in dollars slowed down

In February 2023, the price of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in dollars slowed down (+0.4% after +1.9% in January), averaging 82.8 dollars per barrel. In euro terms, the price per barrel rose a little more (+0.9% after +0.1%), due to the slight decline of the euro against the dollar in February.

Industrial raw material prices edged down

The prices in euros of industrial raw materials diminished in February 2023 (‑0.3% after +3.8% in January).

Mineral prices slowed down significantly (+0.3% after +4.4%), due to the decline in those of non-ferrous metals (‑2.3% after +2.5%) and precious metals (‑3.9% after +1.6%). Only ferrous metal prices remained dynamic, even though they slowed down (+5.2% after +8.0%).

Prices for agro-industrial materials decreased (‑3.8% after +0.1%), following the sharp decline in those for paper pulp (‑7.6% after +1.4%). Prices for hides continued to fall, although less markedly than in the previous month (‑4.1% after ‑21.5%), as did those for tropical woods (‑0.5% after ‑1.4%). On the other hand, prices of natural textile fibres were up slightly again (+0.6% after +0.3%). Finally, prices for sawn softwood (+2.4% after +3.7%) and natural rubber (+0.4% after +2.1%) slowed down.

Food commodity prices in euros gathered pace

Prices in euros of food commodities rose sharply in February 2023 (+2.8% after +0.3% in January), due in particular to the strong rebound in those for tropical foodstuffs (+8.7% after ‑0.3%) and sugar (+7.9% after ‑2.1%). In addition, seafood prices accelerated (+3.4% after +0.6%) and those for meat increased again (+1.0% after +1.1%). Conversely, prices for cereals fell back (‑2.2% after +6.5%) and those for oilseeds were still on the decline (‑0.2% after ‑1.4%).
