In December 2022, the volume of sales in trade fell over a month (‑1.2%) after a virtual stability in November (+0.1%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In December 2022, the volume of sales in trade fell over a month (‑1.2%) after a virtual stability in November (+0.1%).
In December 2022, the sales volume fell over a month in the three main trade sectors
In December 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (‑1.2%) after a slight growth in November (+0.3%). The decrease was mainly due to the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (‑2.7% after ‑1.6%), and food, beverages and tobacco (‑1.7% after +0.5%).
The volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles went down for the third consecutive month in December 2022 (‑1.6%, after ‑0.4% in November and ‑1.4% in October). It decreased both in non specialised stores (‑2.3% after ‑0.9%), in specialised stores (‑1.0% after +0.1%), and in retail trade not in stores (‑2.2% after ‑1.0%). Within specialised stores, the fall was particularly pronounced in the “other household equipment” (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: ‑2.7% after +1.5%) and in food, beverages and tobacco (‑2.3% after +0.3%).
Lastly, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles also decreased in December 2022 (‑0.5%), after remaining stable in November (0.0%).
Early estimate
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have been virtually stable in January 2023 (+0.1%). From November 2022 to January 2023, it may have decreased by 1.8% compared to that of the same three months a year earlier.

The volume of sales of the fourth quarter of 2022 was slightly higher than a year earlier (+0.2%)
The volume of sales of the fourth quarter of 2022 in overall trade increased slightly (+0.2%) compared to that of the fourth quarter of 2021. It grew in wholesale trade, except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.4%) and in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7%). In contrast, it fell in retail trade, except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.7%). Within the latter, the year-on-year volume of sales fell significantly in non-specialised stores (‑2.9%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑2.3%), while it rose in specialised stores (+1.0%).
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in November 2022 is unchanged, compared to the previous release, at +0.1% (after rounding).
