Warning

An error was detected in the results of the January 2023 publication. The synthetic indicator for January 2023 is revised upwards by 3 points, to 83 instead of 80. The opinion balances are also revised. These revisions result from the correction of an anomaly in the survey's processing, which led to the erroneous inclusion of the gross opinion balances of December 2022 in January 2023. The changes published and commented on the previous month were therefore solely the result of the application of seasonal coefficients and did not contain any conjonctural information on January.

In February 2023, household confidence is almost stable. At 82, the indicator that summarizes it has lost one point and remains well below its long-term average (100 between January 1987 and December 2022).

Personal situation

Personal financial situation: slight decrease

In February 2023, households' assessment of their past and future financial situation remains at a low level. The corresponding balances of opinion have lost two points and one point respectively and remain below their long-term average.

The balance of opinion associated with the opportunity to make major purchases is stable and thus remains well below its long-term average.

Opportunity to save: strong increase

In February 2023, the share of households who think it is a good idea to save has risen sharply again, probably as a result of the rise in rates on certain saving products. The corresponding balance of opinion, at its highest level since May 2021, has gained seven points after an increase of eight points in January (revised data).

Households' balance of opinion on their ability to save in the future has felt by one point, while the balance of opinion on their current ability to save is stable. Both balances remain above their long-term average.

Households' perception of prices

For more information

Definition – The synthetic household confidence index summarizes household opinion on the economic situation: the higher its value, the more favourable household judgment of the economic situation is. It is calculated using a factor analysis technique, which enables to summarize concomitant movements of highly correlated variables. Here the index describes the common factor of 8 balances of opinion: the past and future general economic situation in France, the past and future personal financial situation, unemployment, major purchases intentions, current saving capacity and expected saving capacity.

Calculation method – Around 2,000 households are surveyed by telephone, during the first three weeks of each month. Answers to this survey were collected between 27 January and 15 February 2023. For each question, a balance of opinion is calculated as the difference between the percentages of positive and negative answers. As the level of these balances is not open to direct interpretation, comments are based on their changes and their distance to their long-term average. Seasonal coefficients are calculated again every month, hence the slight revision of the seasonal adjusted balance history in each publication.
