In January 2023, the prices of oil in euros were virtually stable (+0.1% after ‑14.8% in December). The prices in euros of imported raw materials (excluding energy) bounced back (+1.7% after ‑0.3%): those of food commodities were slightly back on the rise (+0.3% after ‑3.4%) and those of industrial raw materials increased again (+3.2% after +3.8%).
As natural rubber prices for January 2023 are not yet available from the data provider, they have been assumed to be constant in foreign currency terms for this publication. This hypothesis affects the aggregate price index for agro-industrial raw materials. The values will be revised in the next publication.

Oil prices in dollars recovered slightly, but remained stable in euros
In January 2023, the price of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in dollars picked up (+1.9% after ‑11.4% in December), averaging 82.5 dollars per barrel. In euro terms, the price per barrel was virtually stable (+0.1% after ‑14.8%), due to the appreciation of the euro against the dollar.

Industrial raw material prices increased again
The prices in euros of industrial raw materials were up again in January, although slowing down (+3.2% after +3.8% in December), in the wake of those of minerals (+4.3% after +5.3%). Non-ferrous metal prices (+2.5% after +1.2%) and precious metal prices (+2.1% after +1.5%) accelerated a little, whereas those for ferrous metals slackened, while remaining very dynamic (+7.3% after +14.9%).
Conversely, prices of agro-industrial materials continued to decline (‑4.0% after ‑3.8%), with notably a sharp decline in hide prices (‑21.5% after ‑3.8%). Tropical wood prices also decreased (‑1.4% after ‑0.1%). On the other hand, prices for sawn softwood picked up strongly (+6.3% after ‑11.2%) as did, to a lesser extent, those for paper pulp (+1.7% after ‑2.2%) and natural textile fibres (+1.5% after ‑2.4%).

Food commodity prices in euros recovered slightly
Prices in euros of food commodities rebounded somewhat in January (+0.3% after ‑3.4% in December), due to a strong increase in cereal prices (+6.4% after ‑2.4%) and a smaller growth in those for seafood (+0.5% after ‑3.9%), tropical foodstuffs (+0.3% after ‑3.1%) and meat (+0.2% after ‑3.6%). The prices for oilseeds (‑0.7% after ‑3.1%) and sugar (‑2.1% after ‑0.7%), on their side, fell again.

Petroleum: prices of oil products are monthly averages.
Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw material prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
