Between the end of September and the end of December 2022, private payroll employment was stable: 0.0% (or 3,000 net job creations) after +0.6% in Q3 (+119,100 jobs). This stability came after seven consecutive quarters of growth. Private payroll employment exceeded its end of Q4 2021 level by +1.5% (+304,900 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +4.5% (+888,000 jobs).
In Q4 2022, private payroll employment was marking time: 0.0% after +0.6% in the previous quarter
Between the end of September and the end of December 2022, private payroll employment was stable: 0.0% (or 3,000 net job creations) after +0.6% in Q3 (+119,100 jobs). This stability came after seven consecutive quarters of growth. Private payroll employment exceeded its end of Q4 2021 level by +1.5% (+304,900 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +4.5% (+888,000 jobs).
Temporary employment increased again
In Q4 2022, temporary employment rose again: +0.8% (or +6,500 jobs) after +1.9% in the previous quarter (or +14,900 jobs). As a result, temporary employment was above its pre-sanitary crisis level by +4.5% but below its end of 2021 level by 1.6%.
As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, market or non-market services).
Excluding temporary work, private payroll remained stable or nearly stable in industry, construction and market or non-market services
Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) slowed down in the fourth quarter of 2022: +0.1% (+3,100 jobs) after +0.5% in the previous quarter. After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q2 2022, it exceeded it in Q4 by +0.6% (+19,200 net job creations since the end of 2019).
In market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was at a standstill in the fourth quarter of 2022: -0,1% after +0.7% in Q3 (or -11,400 after +84,600 jobs). In this sector, employment has significantly risen since Q1 2021. It topped its 2021 level (+2.1% or +255,200 jobs) and its pre-sanitary level (+5.3% compared to the end of 2019 or +615,200 jobs).
In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) was stable in the fourth quarter of 2022. It exceeded its end of 2021 level by +0.5% (that is +8,600 jobs) and its pre-sanitary level by +6.6% (+97,400 jobs compared to the end of 2019).
In non temporary market services, private payroll employment was stable in Q4 2022: 0.0% (or -500 jobs) after a near-stability in Q3 (+0.1% that is +3,200 jobs). In this sector, employment was above its end of 2021 level (+0.8% or +21,300 jobs) and its pre-crisis level (+4,2% compared to the end of 2019, or +109,200 jobs).
Finally, in Q4 2022, private payroll employment in agriculture rebounded (+1.7% after -1,0%) and nearly reached its end of 2021 level (+0.2%).
