Over a month, output went up markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment

In December 2022, output of transport equipment increased markedly over a month (+8.3% after stability): it bounced back strongly in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+13.5% after ‑2.0%) and was up again in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+1.5% after +2.8%). Output picked up in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+6.0% after ‑0.3%), with a sharp increase both in the production of electricity and in the distribution of gaseous fuels. Finally it went up slightly in the “other manufacturing” industries (+0.2% after +2.2%) and continued its recovery in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+10.6% after +90.0%), after the sharp drop in October, consequence of the strikes in the refineries. On the contrary, output fell back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑3.3% after +4.9%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑1.7% after +0.4%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased by 2.6%

In the manufacturing industry, output of the fourth quarter of 2022 was 2.6% higher than that of the same quarter of the previous year. However, it was slightly lower in the whole industry (‑0.2%) due to the decline in energy production.

Over this one-year period, output plummeted in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑14.5%), mainly because of the drop in electricity production. It declined in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑1.7%). On the contrary, output advanced in the “other manufacturing” industries (+2.3%). It increased markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment (+9.7%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+15.9%), less impacted than a year ago by supply difficulties for electronic components. Finally, output also went up in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.6%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+0.6%).

The evolution of the November 2022 manufacturing index is unrevised

The evolution of the manufacturing index between October 2022 and November 2022 is unchanged at +2.4% (after rounding). The evolution of the index for the whole industry is also unchanged at +2.0% (after rounding).
