Total consumption of goods

Manufactured goods: sharp decline

In December 2022, household consumption of manufactured goods declined by 1.7%, following a 1.3% increase in November. This decline is mainly due to lower consumption of durable goods.

For the fourth quarter of 2022 as a whole, household consumption of manufactured goods increased by 0.3%.

Durable goods: sharp decline

Consumption of durable goods fell sharply over a month (-3.5% in December 2022, after +2.2% in November - seasonally adjusted data). This is the largest decline since April 2021. It comes after a fairly dynamic November, reflecting a change in the timing of durable goods purchases at the end of the year.

The decrease in December is primarily explained by the drop in consumption of housing equipment (-4.9%), particularly telephones. Households also decreased their purchases of transportation goods (-2.3% in December, after +3.2% in November), especially used vehicles.

Consumption of other durable goods also fell sharply (-4.9% in December, after +1.6% in November), mainly as a result of a decline in purchases of eyeglasses.

Textile clothing: rebound confirmed

Spending on clothing and textiles increased by 0.8% in volume in December 2022, as in November. This increase was driven by purchases of clothing as well as shoes and leather.

Other engineered goods: virtual stability

Consumption of other manufactured goods was almost stable in December (-0.1%). This very slight decrease is linked to spending on do-it-yourself goods and pharmaceutical products.

Energy: new increase

In December 2022, household energy expenditures increased again (+0.7% as in November). This new increase is mainly due to gas consumption, while electricity consumption remained on the decline.

For the fourth quarter of 2022 as a whole, energy consumption fell by 5.5%, in connection with a very mild autumn season and probably also with energy sobriety efforts.

Scope and definition ‑ Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2014, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:

  • – Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)
  • – Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
  • – Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, furniture, chemical and pharmaceutical products, plastic, rubber, minerals, metals, hardware (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewellery, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).

The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
