Over a month, output bounced back in most industries
In November 2022, output recovered in the “other manufacturing” industries (+2.2% after ‑1.8%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.3% after ‑3.5%). It bounced back strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+90.6% after ‑46.9%), given that activity returned to normal after the strikes that had affected the refineries in October. However, the direct contribution of refining (excluding potential ripple effects on the other sectors) to the rebound in the whole industry remained limited (+0.3 points) because of its low weight in industrial value added. Output increased slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.2% after stability) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (+0.2% after ‑2.0%): it recovered in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+3.1% after ‑6.1%) but fell back in the manufacture of other transport equipment (‑2.0% after +1.3%). Output decreased again in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply, but at a more moderate pace (‑0.6% after ‑5.3%).

Over a year, manufacturing output went up by 2.8%
In the manufacturing industry, output of the last three months (September to November 2022) was 2.8% higher than that of the same months of the previous year. However, it was virtually stable in the whole industry (‑0.1%) due to the drop in energy production.
Over this one-year period, output plummeted in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑14.8%), mainly owing to a drop in electricity production. It decreased in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑1.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (‑2.2%). On the contrary, output advanced sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+11.4%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+23.5%), less impacted than a year ago by supply difficulties for electronic components. Output also went up in the “other manufacturing” industries (+1.8%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.0%).
The evolution of the October 2022 manufacturing index is revised downwards
The evolution of the manufacturing index between September 2022 and October 2022 is revised downwards by 0.1 points (after rounding), compared to the previous release, at ‑2.1% instead of ‑2.0%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is revised upwards by 0.1 points (after rounding), at ‑2.5% instead of ‑2.6%.
