The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In September 2022, the volume of sales in trade increased (+0.6%), albeit less markedly than in August (+2.4%).

In September 2022, the sales volume grew in the three main trade sectors

In September 2022, the volume of sales in retail trade sped up (+1.4% after +1.0% in August), mainly due to specialised stores (+2.5% after +1.6%). The volume of sales increased slightly again in non-specialised stores (+0.2%, as in August), and fell back in retail trade not in stores (-0.9% after +1.1%). The dynamism of specialised stores was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +2.4% after +1.5%), and the "other household equipment" (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +4.0% after +2.8%).

The volume of sales in wholesale trade slowed down in September 2022 (+0.3% after +1.8% in August). While it kept increasing in the "other specialised wholesale" (+2.6% after +2.1%), it fell back sharply in the agricultural raw materials and live animals (-4.8% after +4.7%).

In September 2022, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles slowed down strongly (+0.3% after +8.7% in August), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (+0.1% after +10.9%).

Early estimate

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in October 2022 (-2.7%). From August to October 2022, it may have increased by 1.2% compared to that of the same period one year earlier.

The volume of sales of the third quarter 2022 increased by 1.2% over a year

The volume of sales of the third quarter of 2022 in overall trade went up (+1.2%) compared to that of the third quarter of 2021. It grew in wholesale trade (+1.2%), in retail trade (+1.5%), and in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.7%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased over a year in specialised stores (+1.6%) and non-specialised stores (+1.8%). In contrast, it declined slightly in retail trade not in stores (-0.3%).

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in August 2022 has been revised slightly upwards, at +2.4% (after rounding) instead of +2.3% as initially published.
