Fall of cereal prices over a month and slowdown year on year
In August 2022, cereal prices went down moderately over one month (–1.1% after –9.0% in July). This drop was due to the fall of soft wheat prices (–2.7% after –10.0%) due in particular to fears of a world economic recession and a recovery in Ukrainian exports. Maize prices went up (+5.7% after –0.8%), as supply was restricted owing to the drought in France and the United States. Year on year, cereal prices decelerated, but continued to rise sharply (+40.1% after +59.7%). They have doubled since August 2019 (+102.5%).
Oilseed prices fell more sharply than cereal prices in August 2022 (–3.2% over one month after –11.5%) due to falls of rapeseed (–4.3% after –12.8%) and sunflower (–0.8% after –6.4%) prices, while those of soybean rebounded (+5.2% after –6.3%). Year on year, oilseed prices slowed down significantly, but remained up sharply (+14.7% after +24.3%). Since August 2019, they rose by 74.2%.

Slowdown of animal prices over one month and acceleration year on year
In August 2022, animal prices slowed down over one month (+1.2% after +2.6%), due to the deceleration of pig (+4.7% after +8.1%) and poultry (+1.7% after +4.4%) prices, while large cattle prices stabilised (–0.1% after +0.1%).
Year on year, animal prices continued to accelerate in August 2022 (+30.0% after +28.7% in July and +24.1% in June). This acceleration was due in particular to pig (+38.8% after +28.3%) and poultry (+26.0% after +24.4%) prices, while large cattle prices slowed down slightly but continued to rise sharply (+33.5% after +35.8%). Animal prices in August 2022 were 34.7% higher than in August 2019.

More about French agricultural price indices
The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. Their variations should therefore be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.
The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.
The methodology of IPPAP is available on the Insee web site: https://www.insee.fr/en/metadonnees/source/indicateur/p1657/description
