In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In July 2022, the volume of sales in trade decreased (−1.8%), following a slight growth in June (+0.2%).

In July 2022, the sales volume decreased in the three main trade sectors

In July 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade fell back (−1.7%) following a growth in June (+1.1%). The decrease was mainly led by "other specialised wholesale" (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: −3.9% after +0.4%), and food, beverages and tobacco (−3.8% after +1.8%).

The volume of sales in retail trade fell again in July 2022 (−2.4% after −0.9% in June). It decreased both in specialised stores (−2.6% after −2.4%), non-specialised stores (−2.2% after +0.8%), and retail trade not in stores (−1.7% after +0.9%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales fell in all the sub-sectors, particularly in "other household equipment" (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: −5.9% after +0.6%), and "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: −2.1% after −4.4%).

In July 2022, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles kept falling (−0.9% after −1.1% in June). While it decreased again in the sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−3.9% after −0.7%), it bounced back slightly in the sale of motor vehicles (+0.3% after −1.4%).

Early estimate

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased slightly in August 2022 (+0.2%). From June to August 2022, it may have increased by 0.4% compared to that of the same period one year earlier.

The volume of sales of the past three months increased slightly over a year (+0.4%)

The volume of sales of the three months under review (May to July 2022) in overall trade increased by 0.4% compared to that of the same period one year earlier. It grew both in retail trade (+2.3%) and wholesale trade (+0.4%), while it fell back in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−3.8%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased over a year in specialised stores (+3.0%) and non-specialised stores (+3.1%). In contrast, it decreased in retail trade not in stores (−4.4%).

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in June 2022 has been revised downwards, at +0.2% (after rounding) instead of +0.4% initially published.
