In Q2 2022, production costs in construction rose by 3.6% Costs of production indices in construction - second quarter 2022

In Q2 2022, the production costs in construction rose by 3.6% over a quarter, after +2.8% in the first quarter. They sped up in specialized construction works (+2.8% after +2.4%), as well as in civil engineering (+6.8% after +4.2%) and in buildings construction (+3.5% after +2.8%). These rises were mainly due to the increase in the costs of materials (+14.0% in civil engineering and +6.8% in buildings construction), especially steel products and petroleum based products such as bitumen.

Year on year, the production costs for construction went up by 10.1% in Q2 2022 (after +7.4% in the first quarter). They sped up in specialized construction works (+8.6% after +6.4%), in civil engineering (+17.2% after +12.2%) and in buildings construction (+10.2% after +7.6%).

Revision

The Q1 2022 variation in producer costs in construction over a quarter has been revised downwards by 0.2 points: it now stands at +2.8%, instead of +3.0% as published in June 2022.

For further information

Monthly production cost indices are released every three months.

These indices aggregate the cost indices of six factors of production, four of which are commented here (equipment, labour, energy and materials) and account for slightly less than 90% in the calculation of the producer costs in construction.

These indices are subject to revision. They are primarily used as inputs for the national accounts and macroeconomics analyses.
