Since the publication of the detailed results of the Quarterly Employment Estimates in the first quarter of 2022, the quarterly changes in payroll employment takes into account the dynamics of alternating work-study students (beneficiaries of an apprenticeship or professionalisation contract).

In Q2 2022, private payroll employment increased again: +0.5% after +0.3% in the previous quarter

Between the end of March and the end of June 2022, private payroll employment accelerated slightly: +0.5% after +0.3% in the previous quarter (that is 102,500 net job creations after 69,500). These increases follow on the increases in 2021 (+4.3% over a year, that is +838,700 jobs) which had already more than offset the decline in 2020 (-1.3% or -256,500 jobs). In total, mid-2022, private payroll employment exceeded its pre sanitary crisis level (that is the end of 2019) by 3.8% (+754,200 jobs).

Temporary employment decreased for the second consecutive quarter

In Q2 2022, temporary employment decreased again: -2.1% (or -17,400 jobs) after -1.7% in the previous quarter (or -13,800 jobs). These declines follow seven consecutive quarters of increases (+350,400 jobs from Q2 2020 to Q4 2021) which had more than compensated for the historic drop in the first quarter of 2020 (-300,300 jobs). As a result, mid-2022, temporary employment remained above its pre sanitary crisis level.

Excluding temporary work, private payroll employment in the second quarter of 2022 increased by 0.6% (+119,800 jobs). As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (industry, construction, market or non market services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll increased strongly in the service sector and stabilized in the other sectors

Industrial employment (excluding temporary work) barely increased in the second quarter of 2022: +0.1% (+3,100 jobs) after -0.1% in the previous quarter. This is the only sector for which payroll employment remains below its pre sanitary crisis level (-0.4% or -12,000 jobs compared to the end of 2019).

In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) is stable in the second quarter of 2022 (after +0.1% in the first quarter). It is 1.2% higher than in mid-2021 (+19,300 jobs) and 6.2% higher (+91,600 jobs) than the end of 2019 level.

In non temporary market services, private payroll employment increased again strongly in the second quarter of 2022: +0.8% after +0.6% (that is +97,300 jobs after +77,300). This growth explains most of the total increase in private payroll employment. In this sector, employment is well above its mid-2021 level (+3.5% or +416,400 jobs) and pre-crisis level (+4.5% compared to the end of 2019, or +528,900 jobs).

Finally, in the second quarter of 2022, private payroll employment in non market services increased again significantly: +0.7% after +0.3% (or +19,500 after +7,600 jobs). It was well above its level in mid-2021 (+1.7% or +45,100 jobs) and at the end of 2019 (+4.5% or +119,000 jobs).
