Household consumption of goods increased slightly in June (+0.2%) Household consumption expenditure on goods - June 2022
Household consumption in goods in volume* increased in June, but less strongly than in May (+0.2% after +0.4% - revised data). This slight increase is due to the clear rebound of energy consumption (+3.1% after -2.7% in May). Consumption of manufactured goods decreased (-0.7% after +2.1%). Food consumption also decreased (-0.3% after +0.1%).
For the second quarter of 2022 as a whole, household consumption of goods decreased by 1.3%.

Energy: clear rebound
Energy consumption rebounded in June (+3.1% after -2.7%). This is explained in particular by the return to normal of gas and electricity consumption after a clear drop in May (+4.5% after -5.0%). Fuel consumption, especially gasoline, also contributed to this increase (+1.3% after +0.3%).
Over the whole second quarter 2022, household energy consumption decreased by 0.6%.

Engineered goods: decline
Consumption of engineered goods fell in June (-0.7% after +2.1%), mainly due to the sharp decline in consumption of clothing and textiles (-4.6% after +10.9%). Consumption of "other engineered goods" continued to decline slightly (-0.2% after -0.3%), while consumption of durable goods increased again (+0.7% after +0.3%).
Over the whole second quarter 2022, household consumption of engineered goods decreased by 0.7%.
Durables: increase
In June, consumption of durable goods continued to increase (+0.7% after +0.3%). This is mainly due to the increase in consumption of transport equipment (+1.4% after +0.9%), with notably an increase in purchases of new cars and to a lesser extent campers. Consumption of housing equipment increased slightly (+0.2% after +0.0%). Consumption of other durable goods decreased again, with a drop in purchases of cameras.
Textile-clothing: sharp decline
Consumption of clothing and textiles fell sharply in June after a strong increase in May (-4.6% after +10.9%), due to a drop in purchases of ready-to-wear clothing and shoes.
Other engineered goods: slight decrease
Consumption of "other engineered goods" continues to decline slightly (-0.2% after -0.3%), with a drop in purchases of perfumes and DIY equipment.

In June, food consumption decreased (-0.3% after +0.1%). All consumption of agricultural and agri-food products fell, except for consumption of beverages and tobacco, which increased.
Over the whole second quarter 2022, household food consumption decreased by 2.3%.

The variation of expenditure for the month of May 2022 is revised downwards
The evolution of household consumption in goods for May is revised downwards by 0.3 points, to +0.4% instead of +0.7%. Since the previous publication, new information has been integrated and the coefficients for seasonal adjustment (SA) and trading day adjustment (TDA) have been updated.

Scope and definition – Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2010, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1) Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
The manufactured goods correspond to all the products C1, C2, C3, C4, C5.
