In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In May 2022, the volume of sales in trade picked up (+0.5%) following a fall in April (−1.3%).

In May 2022, a rebound in the volume of sales mainly led by the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In May 2022, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles bounced back (+2.9% after −4.0%), especially for motor vehicles (+3.0% after −5.4%).

The volume of sales in retail trade kept increasing in May 2022 (+0.5% after +0.3% in April). It sped up in specialised stores (+1.7% after +0.2%) and recovered in retail trade not in stores (+3.5% after −2.7%). The volume of sales fell back in non-specialised stores (−2.1% after +1.5%). Within specialised stores, the increase was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +3.5% after +0.4%).

In May 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade was virtually stable (+0.1%) following a fall in April (−1.6%). It bounced back in household goods (+1.4% after −1.0%), and dwindled in information and communication equipment (−3.0% after +2.6%).

Over the second quarter of 2022, it may have increased by 6.0% when compared with that of the second quarter of 2021, with a base effect partly due to the third national lockdown implemented on April 3, 2021.

The volume of sales of the past three months increased by 3.6% over a year

The volume of sales of the three months under review (March to May 2022) in overall trade increased by 3.6% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. It grew sharply both in retail trade (+7.1%) and wholesale trade (+3.4%), with a favourable base effect due to the closure of non-essential stores during the third lockdown. In contrast, the volume of sales fell back in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−3.6%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased strongly over a year in specialised stores (+13.3%). It also went up in non-specialised stores (+4.2%), while it decreased markedly in retail trade not in stores (−11.2%), which had benefited during the third lockdown from the reinforced health measures targeting the in-store trade.

Revisions
