Over a year, manufacturing output increased by +1.3%
Cumulative output over the last three months (March to May 2022) was higher than that of the same months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+1.3%), but lower in the whole industry (–0.4%), due to the drop in energy production.
Over this one-year period, output decreased markedly in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–8.6%) and declined moderately in the manufacture of transport equipment (–1.5%): in this latter activity, the increase in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+3.1%) cushioned the sharp fall in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−7.9%) which was strongly impacted by the shortage in semiconductors and other inputs. Conversely, output was up in the “other manufacturing” industries (+1.5%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.5%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.2%). It climbed sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+29.9%), because of a particularly low level a year ago due to the shutdown of several refineries.
The evolution of the April 2022 manufacturing index is revised downwards
The evolution of the manufacturing index between March and April 2022 is revised downwards by 0.1 points, after rounding, at −0.5% instead of −0.4%. The evolution of the index for the whole industry is also revised downwards by 0.2 points, after rounding, at −0.3% instead of −0.1%.
