In March 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises recovered (+1,9% after a sharp decline of –4.7% in February seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations bounced back (+2.1% after –7.3%) and conventional business births recovered as well (+1.6% after –0.4%). The raw number of business births increased strongly over the last twelve months (+8.5% year on year), though at a slower pace than in the previous month (+13.6%). This increase is partly explained by the heavy fall in business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

In March 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises recovered (+1,9% after a sharp decline of –4.7% in February seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations bounced back (+2.1% after –7.3%) and conventional business births recovered as well (+1.6% after –0.4%). The raw number of business births increased strongly over the last twelve months (+8.5% year on year), though at a slower pace than in the previous month (+13.6%). Rebound in business births in business support activities and in information and communication

In March 2022, the number of business births bounced back in business support activities (+2.7% compared to the previous month) and in information and communication activities (+12.6%), after very sharp decreases in February in these sectors. However, business births decreased in trade and in transportation and storage (-3.3% in each of these sectors).

Very slight decrease in business births in the first quarter of 2022

The raw number of business births in the first quarter of 2022 decreased very slightly in comparison with the same quarter of 2021 (–0.4%). Conventional sole proprietorships’ births fell sharply (–11.2%) and micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations decreased more moderately (–1.6%). Conversely, company births increased sharply (+7.7%).

Over this period, transportation and storage activities made the strongest negative contribution to the overall change (–17,600 business births in comparison with the first quarter of 2021, representing a contribution of –6.1 points)*. Within this sector, the strongest fall was in other postal and courier activities (–18,200 business births in Q1 2022 in comparison with the same quarter of 2021).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Sharp increase in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up sharply (+8.5% year on year). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+6.6%), and even more company births (+20.2%), in view of the very low level of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Conversely, conventional sole proprietorships’ births decreased (–3.7%).

Six business births out of ten are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In March 2022, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs in business births over the last twelve months barely decreased, standing at 60.6%.

The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by Eurostat, to harmonize and compare European data.

The appearance of a market producer legal unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources.

The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
