In February 2022, output went down in “other manufacturing”

In February 2022, output fell back in the “other manufacturing” industries (–1.3% after +4.2%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–2.7% after stability). It decreased again in the manufacture of transport equipment (–1.8% after –4.3%), due to the decline in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (–5.7% after –5.8%), while it increased in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+0.9% after –3.3%). On the contrary, it was up in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.5% after +0.1%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.9% after +1.6%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+0.6% after +4.7%).

In February 2022, output remained in decline compared to its February 2020 level in most industrial activities. It plunged in the manufacture of transport equipment (−27.6%), both in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−27.5%) and in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−27.7%). The decrease was more moderate in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–5.0%), in “other manufacturing” (−1.5%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−1.0%). On the contrary, output was above its February 2020 level in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+2.9%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased (+0.9%)

Cumulative output over the last three months (December 2021 to February 2022) was higher than that of the same months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+0.9%), as well as in the whole industry (+0.4%).

Over this one-year period, output went up in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+3.8%), in “other manufacturing” (+0.9%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.1%). It picked up sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+40.6%), because of a particularly low level a year ago due to the shutdown of several refineries. Conversely, it decreased markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment (–6.0%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−13.8%) which was strongly impacted by the semiconductor shortage. It also diminished in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–2.4%).

The evolution of the January 2022 manufacturing index is revised upwards

The evolution of the manufacturing index between December 2021 and January 2022 is revised upwards by 0.4 points, at +2.2% instead of +1.8%. The evolution of the whole industry index is revised upwards by 0.2 points (at +1.8% instead of +1.6%). These revisions are primarily due to the raw data.
