4 March 2022 · n° 61In January 2022, manufacturing output increased by 1.8% Industrial production index - January 2022
In January 2022, output went up in the manufacturing industry (+1.8%, after +0.2%), as well as in the whole industry (+1.6%, after –0.1%). Compared to February 2020 (the last month before the first general lockdown), output remained in decline in the manufacturing industry (–4.6%), as well as in the whole industry (–3.9%).
Since the move to the new basis 2015 in March 2018, the industrial production indices (IPI) are reviewed at the rate of one fifth of the series each year. The aim is to improve the relevance of the IPI with regards to economic and technological evolutions, especially by including emerging products or removing declining products. The fourth annual review is implemented with this publication in March 2022. The coverage of the industrial production index is improved for the manufacture of wearing apparel and for the manufacture of other electrical equipment. A new series is now available: the manufacture of sports goods. The adjusted series have been backcasted from 2019, which can generate revisions on these indices up to that date. In parallel with this modification, seasonal and working-day adjustment (SA-WDA) models have been reestimated on the recent past, in order to improve the quality of the index, and weights have been updated (chain-linked index).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

Over a year, manufacturing output decreased slightly (−0.8%)
Cumulative output over the last three months (November 2021 to January 2022) was lower than that of the same months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (−0.8%), as well as in the whole industry (−0.7%).
Over this one-year period, output plunged in the manufacture of transport equipment (−11.0%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−14.8%) which was strongly impacted by the semiconductor shortage. It diminished slightly in “other manufacturing” (–0.2%). It was virtually stable in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–0.1%). Conversely, it went up in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.6%), increased sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+29.7%) and slightly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.9%).
The evolution of the December 2021 manufacturing index is revised upwards
The evolution of the manufacturing index between November and December 2021 is revised upwards by 0.1 points, at +0.2% instead of +0.1%. The evolution of the whole industry index is also revised upwards by 0.1 points (at −0.1% instead of −0.2%). The revisions of the raw data and those due to the update of the SA−WDA coefficients partially offset each other.
