Producer prices in the French industry: +1.1%
In December 2021, the industrial producer prices slowed down over a month (+1.1% after +3.2% in November), both on the home market (+1.0% after +3.9%) and on the foreign markets (+1.0% after +1.8%). Over a year, they remained on a strong upward trend, accelerating slightly (+16.9% after +16.7%).
HOME MARKET: +1.0%
In December 2021, the industrial producer prices for the home market rose by 1.0% over a month (after +3.9%). They were driven up strongly by those of energy, while those of manufactured products were stable (after +0.6%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices for the home market soared: +17.7% in December 2021 (after +17.9% in November).
Deceleration of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In December 2021, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water decelerated sharply over a month (+3.5% after +12.7%). The electricity production and trade prices slowed down markedly (+4.9% after +11.1%), especially on the wholesale market. Contained by the freezing of regulated tariffs, the prices of trade services of gas through mains decelerated also strongly (+3.0% after +14.7%). On the contrary, prices of steam and air conditioning supply services sped up considerably (+12.3% after +2.6%), reflecting increases in gas prices. Year on year, the rise of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water carried on the strong acceleration that started at the beginning of 2021: +41.6% in December 2021 (after +39.5% in November and +31.7% in October).
New decline over a month of refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum fell by 6.9% over a month in December 2021 (after –1.5%). Over a year, they slowed down sharply (+64.4% after +99.3% in the previous month).

Slowdown of the “other industrial products” prices
The prices of the “other industrial products” rose by 0.4% in December 2021 over a month (after +1.0%). Prices of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment, were up by 0.4% (as in the previous month). Those of paper and paper products kept rising sharply (+1.5% after +1.6%). On the other hand, prices decelerated for chemicals and chemical products (+0.3% after +4.9%) and for basic metals (+0.5% after +0.9%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” remained on a strong upward trend: +11.5% in December 2021 (after +11.6% in November).
New rise of food and beverage prices
In December 2021, the food and beverage prices went up by 0.6% over a month (after +0.8%), especially those of processed and preserved meat (+2.0% after +2.3%) and of prepared animal feeds (+1.6% after +2.3%). Year on year, the food and beverage prices rose by 4.0% (after +3.9%).
Rise of transport equipment prices
In December 2021, the prices of transport equipment rose by 0.6% over a month (as in the previous month), driven up by those of motor vehicles (+1.2% after +1.0%). Over a year, they went up by 4.2% (after +3.7%).
Rise of the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery
In December 2021, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were up by 0.4% over a month (as in the previous month), mainly those of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+0.8%, as in the previous month). Year on year, they rose by 4.1% (after +3.9%).

In December 2021, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets decelerated over a month (+1.0% after +1.8%), especially those of electricity and those of manufactured products (+0.4% after +0.7%). Over a year, they remained on a strong upward trend (+14.9% in December 2021 after +14.5% in November).
The prices of the “other industrial products” rose by 1.0% over a month (as in the previous month), mainly due to those of chemicals and chemical products (+2.8% after +1.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” were up by 14.9% in December 2021 (after +14.1% in the previous month).
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products fell by 8.0% over a month (after –0.1%) and decelerated sharply over a year (+63.7% after +102.8%).
The prices of transport equipment slowed down over a month (+0.3% after +0.5%) and rose by 3.1% over a year (after +2.4%).
Those of food and beverages went up by 0.8% over a month (after +0.9%) and accelerated over a year (+6.3% after +5.4%).
At last, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were up by 0.4% over a month (after +0.2%) and rose by 3.3% over a year (after +2.8%).

Import prices of industrial products: +1.5%
In December 2021, the import prices of industrial products kept rising sharply over a month, driven up by those of natural gas, but at a more moderate pace (+1.5% after +2.0% in the previous month). Manufactured product prices stabilized (after +0.5% in November). Over a year, the import prices of industrial products kept rising strongly (+23.3% after +22.6%).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products kept falling over a month (–5.2% after –1.9%) and decelerated sharply over a year (+61.2% after +90.8%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” slowed down sharply over a month (+0.4% after +1.1%), especially those of chemicals and chemical products (+0.7% after +3.0%), while those of basic metals rose by 1.0% (after +0.9%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” were up by 15.3% (as in November).
The prices of transport equipment were down by 0.5% over a month (after –0.1%), owing to the fall of those of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (–0.8% after –0.2%). Over a year, they continued to decelerate (+0.9% in December 2021 after +1.6% in November and +2.1% in October).
The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery sped up slightly over a month (+0.4% after +0.2%) and over a year (+4.0% after +3.5%).
At last, prices of food, beverages and tobacco were up by 0.7% over a month (after +0.8%) and accelerated over a year (+6.8% after +5.9%).

Revisions
The variation of the producer price index in industry between October 2021 and November 2021 has been revised upwards by 0.4 points (+3.9% instead of +3.5%), after taking into account consolidated data on electricity production and trade prices.
The variation of the import prices of industrial products between October 2021 and November 2021 has been strongly revised upwards by 2.1 points (+2.0% instead of –0.1%), after taking into account late responses from importers concerning the import prices of natural gas, liquefied or in gaseous state, which were very dynamic.

The producer price indices in industry measure the change of producer prices of goods and services, linked to a given industrial activity and sold on the home market or on the foreign markets.
The import price indices of industrial products measure the change of transaction prices of goods and services purchased by economic agents established on French territory to non-resident agents.
Calculation method
They are calculated on the basis of the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise), which is operated by INSEE.
