In November 2021, the volume of sales in trade started to grow again (+1.3%) after a stability in October.
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In November 2021, the volume of sales in trade started to grow again (+1.3%) after a stability in October.
In November 2021, the sales volume increased in the three main trade sectors
In November 2021, the volume of sales in wholesale trade sped up (+1.8% after +0.2% in October), especially in household goods (+3.7% after +0.6%). By contrast, it dwindled in "other machinery, equipment and supplies" (−2.6% after +0.8%).
The volume of sales in retail trade kept increasing in November (+0.6% after +0.2%). It started to grow again in specialised stores (+1.0% after a stability in October), sped up in retail trade not in stores (+1.2% after +0.7%), and remained almost unchanged in non-specialised stores (−0.1% after +0.2%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales recovered in all sub-sectors, except for automotive fuel (−2.1% after −0.3%). The increase was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +1.2% after −0.1%) and cultural and recreation goods (+4.1% after +0.8%).
In November 2021, the volume of sales bounced back in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.9% after −0.9% in October), especially for motor vehicles (+1.5% after −1.2%).
Forecast
According to early estimates, a slight decrease is expected in December 2021 in the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.2% over a month). Over the fourth quarter of 2021, it may thus have increased by 9.1% when compared with that of the fourth quarter of 2020, with a base effect due to the restrictive measures that had been put in place during the second lockdown, from 29 October to 15 December 2020.
