In December 2021, the total turnover in large-scale food retailing was stable (0.0%) after an increase of 0.7% in November. The turnover slowed down in food products (+1.0% after +1.7%), while it dwindled in non-food products (−1.9% after +1.0%). Concerning the sales of automotive fuel, the turnover kept decreasing in December (−2.8% after −1.9% in November).
The turnover from in-store sales slowed down both in supermarkets (+0.4% after +1.0%) and hypermarkets (+0.2% after +1.1%).
In December 2021, a stability of large-scale food retailing turnover
In December 2021, the total turnover in large-scale food retailing was stable (0.0%) after an increase of 0.7% in November. The turnover slowed down in food products (+1.0% after +1.7%), while it dwindled in non-food products (−1.9% after +1.0%). Concerning the sales of automotive fuel, the turnover kept decreasing in December (−2.8% after −1.9% in November).
The turnover from in-store sales slowed down both in supermarkets (+0.4% after +1.0%) and hypermarkets (+0.2% after +1.1%).
Increase in turnover over a year (+4.7%)
The turnover of the fourth quarter of 2021 in large-scale food retailing increased (+4.7%) when compared with that of the fourth quarter of 2020. The sales decreased in food products (−2.1%), while they increased in non-food products (+2.0%). The sales of automotive fuel grew very strongly (+53.6%), due on the one hand to a base effect owing to the restrictive measures that had been put in place during the second lockdown from 29 October to 15 December 2020 and, on the other, to the rise in prices.
Year on year, the sales over the fourth quarter of 2021 went up both in supermarkets (+4.2%) and hypermarkets (+6.1%).
