In December 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises increased slightly (+0.8% after –3.6% in November seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations went up (+2.7% after –5.0%) while conventional business births fell again (–2.4% after –1.2%). The raw number of business births increased strongly in 2021 (+17.4%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Starting with the January 2022 release of the Informations Rapides, business births will be calculated according to a revised scheme. This will result in history revisions of business births, mainly in level .

In December 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises increased slightly (+0.8% after –3.6% in November seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations went up (+2.7% after –5.0%) while conventional business births fell again (–2.4% after –1.2%). The raw number of business births increased strongly in 2021 (+17.4%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Sharp increased in business births in business support activities

In December 2021, the number of business births increased sharply in business support activities (+5.3%) and in construction (+5.6%).

Decrease in business births over the last quarter of 2021

The raw number of business births totted up during the last quarter of 2021 decreased in comparison with the last quarter of 2020 (–1.4%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations decreased sharply (–3.6%), and even more the conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–12.3%). However, companies’ births went up (+7.7%).

Transportation and storage was the sector that contributed the most to the overall fall (–8,500 business births, which comes to a contribution of –3.4 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in other postal and courier activities (–9,300 business births over the last quarter of 2021 in comparison with the same quarter one year ago, which had been characterized by a sharp increase).

Sharp increase in business births in 2021

The raw number of business births went up sharply in 2021 (+17.4%), notably due to the particularly low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased strongly (+17.0%), and even more companies’ births (+24.3%). Sole proprietorships’ births went up more moderately (+1.7%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In December 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs in business births decreased slightly and represents 64.4% over the last twelve months.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in November 2021 has been lowered by 0.1 points to –3.6% instead of –3.5%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
