Producer prices in the French industry: +2.6%

In October 2021, the rise of industrial producer prices reached 2.6% over a month (after +1.7% in the previous month) and 14,0% over a year (after +11.0% in the previous month). These were the highest increases recorded in the available data since January 1995. Prices accelerated over a month, both on the home market (+2.9% after +1.7%) and the foreign markets (+2.1% after +1.7%).

HOME MARKET: +2.9%

In October 2021, the industrial producer prices for the home market accelerated sharply over a month (+2.9% after +1.7%), driven up strongly by those of energy and, to a lesser extent, by those of manufactured products (+1.5% after +0.7%). Over a year, the rise of industrial producer prices for the home market reached 14.9% in October 2021 (after +11.7% in September).

New strong rise of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water

In October 2021, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water remained on an strong upward trend over a month (+6.6% after +5.0% in the previous month). The prices of trade services of gas through mains accelerated strongly (+28.2% after +14.7%): a further increase in regulated tariffs and tensions on international markets have caused prices to soar. The prices of electricity production and trade rose by 5.7% (after +5.9%), driven by those on the wholesale market. At last, the prices of steam and air conditioning supply services sped up also sharply (+20.1% after +14.8%), in connection with gas price increases. Year on year, the rise in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water reached 30.7% in October 2021 (after +21.9% in September).

Rise of refined petroleum product prices

In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum accelerated over a month in October 2021 (+14.7% after +3.4%), reaching their highest level since January 2014. Over a year, they soared by 106.8% (after +80.5% in the previous month).

Persistent rise of prices of the “other industrial products”

The prices of the “other industrial products” kept rising in October 2021 over a month (+1.1% after +0.7%), passing on the persistent increases in raw material prices. Those of chemicals and chemical products accelerated (+3.1% after +2.3%), while those of basic metals decelerated slightly (+2.0% after +2.6%). Moreover, the prices of printing and recording services recovered sharply (+4.2% after –0.7%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” carried on the acceleration that started at the beginning of 2021: +10.4% in October 2021 (after +9.3% in September and +8.5% in August).

Slight increase of food and beverage prices

In October 2021, the food and beverage prices went up by 0.4% over a month (after +0.2%). They rose by 3.0% over a year (after +3.2%).

Rise of transport equipment prices

In October 2021, the prices of transport equipment rose by 0.5% over a month (as in the previous month), driven up by those of motor vehicles (+1.0% after +0.8%). Over a year, they went up by 3.4% (as in the previous month).

Slight rise of the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery

In October 2021, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were up by 0.2% over a month (after +0.4%). Year on year, they rose by 2.9% (after +2.7%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: +2.1%

In October 2021, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets rose by 2.1% over a month (after +1.7%): half of the rise was due to electricity prices and half to prices of manufactured products (+1.0% after +0.4%). Over a year, the rise of industrial producer prices for the foreign markets reached 12.4% (after +9.6% in the previous month).

The prices of the “other industrial products” were up by 0.8% over a month (as in September): those of basic metals accelerated (+3.1% after +1.4%) while those of chemicals and chemical products decelerated (+0.5% after +1.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” rose by 12.2% in October 2021 (after +11.2% in the previous month).

In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products accelerated over a month (+14.5% after +5.9%) and remained on a very strong upward trend over a year (+115.9% after +93.0%).

The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery rose by 0.7% over a month (after –0.1%) and by 2.6% over a year (after +2.1% in the previous month).

The prices of transport equipment recovered over a month (+0.4% after –0.3%) and rose by 1.8% over a year (as in the previous month).

At last, the prices of food and beverages were up by 0.3% over a month (as in the previous month). Over a year, they rose by 4.2% (after +4.0%).

Import prices of industrial products: +3.3%

The import prices of industrial products also reached unprecedented rises, according to data available since January 2005, both over a month (+3.3% after +2.9% in the previous month) and over a year (+20.7% after +17.1% in the previous month), mainly due to persistent increases in raw material prices (gas, oil, steel, wood, etc.). The prices of manufactured products accelerated over a month (+1.5% after +0.7%), as over a year (+10.9% after +9.4%).

The prices of coke and refined petroleum products accelerated over a month (+16.2% after +7.9%) and their rise strengthened over a year (+113.5% after +82.7%).

The prices of the “other industrial products” sped up also over a month (+0.9% after +0.6%), driven up by those of chemicals and chemical products (+1.9% after +0.5%) and those of basic metals (+1.1% after +0.5%). Moreover, the prices of wearing apparel kept rising sharply (+1.3% after +1.4%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” were up by 13.9% (after +13.1% in September).

The prices of transport equipment recovered over a month (+0.8% after –0.7%), due to the rebound of motor vehicle prices (+1.5% after –1.6%). Year on year, they rose by 2.4% (after +1.7% in the previous month).

The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery rose by 0.5% over a month (as in the previous month) and by 2.9% over a year (after +2.5%).

At last, the prices of food, beverages and tobacco accelerated over a month (+0.8% after +0.3%), and went up sharply over a year (+5.2% after +4.3%).
