In September 2021, output in services was stable after three consecutive months of growth. It exceeded its February 2020 level (last month before the start of the first lockdown), as was already the case in July and August.

In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In September 2021, output in services was stable after three consecutive months of growth. It exceeded its February 2020 level (last month before the start of the first lockdown), as was already the case in July and August.

In September 2021, output slowed down in most sectors

In September 2021, output declined in transportation and storage (–3.9% after +3.5%) where all activities were down except postal and courier activities (+11.6% after –3.1%). Output fell for the first time in accommodation and food service activities (–3.2% after +5.1%), four months after the gradual lifting of the measures affecting their activities. Conversely, output sped up in real estate activities (+3.9% after +2.1%), recovered in information-communication (+0.7% after –0.1%) and continued its rebound in arts, entertainment and recreation (+6.4% after +13.3%). It was almost steady in professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.1% after +1.0%) and was steady in administrative and support services activities (0.0% after +1.2%).

Output in services was above its February 2020 level (+2.8%). It was significantly higher in three of the main sectors: information-communication (+11.8%), professional, scientific and technical activities (+4.6%), and real estate activities (+5.2%). It remained below its February 2020 level in transportation and storage (–3.3%, with a specific focus on air transport :–43.7%), arts, entertainment and recreation (–5.6%) and accommodation and food services activities (–0.6%). In the latter sector, output was above its pre-crisis level in the food and beverage service activities sector (+2.0%) while it remained lower in accommodation (–9.8%). It declined more moderately in administrative and support services activities (–0.5%).

Over a year, output was up (+10.8%)

Due to a base effect linked to the still uncertain health situation in July-August-September 2020, output in the third quarter of 2021 was 10.8% higher than in the same quarter of 2020.

Output was thus up sharply year-on-year in professional, scientific and technical activities (+11.4%), administrative and support services activities (+12.9%), transportation and storage (+7.2%), information-communication (+10.7%), accommodation and food service activities (+14.8%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+19.0%) and real estate activities (+5.2%).

Revisions

The month-on-month percentage change in the index of services output in August is unchanged at +2.1%, compared to the previous publication.
