graphiqueTotal consumption of goods
Manufactured goods: sharp decline
Consumption of manufactured goods fell sharply in October (–1.8% after +1.9% in September).
Durables: –2.7%
Purchases of durable goods fell sharply (–2.7% after +1.6% in September). This decrease is mainly explained by the strong decrease in the consumption of transport equipment (–3.3% after +1.9%), particularly with the fall in sales of new cars. The sharp decline in purchases of housing equipment (–2.7% after +0.8%), mainly due to a significant drop in furniture consumption, also contributed to this decrease. Despite this, consumption of housing equipment remains above the pre–crisis level (+5.7% compared to Q4 2019) while that of transportation equipment is still significantly below (–14.0%).
Textile-clothing: –1.3%
Clothing-textile spending decreased in October (–1.3% after +6.1% in September). However, they remain slightly above their pre-crisis level (+0.2% compared to Q4 2019).
Other manufactured goods: –0.6%
In October, consumption of "other manufactured goods" decreased again (–0.6% after –0.4% in September), due to a significant drop in purchases of perfumes and DIY equipment.

Food products: rebound
In October, food consumption increased by 0.7%, after a sharp decline of –1.5% in September. This rebound comes from an increase in consumption of manufactured food products and agricultural products, with the exception of meat consumption, which continues to decline. Food consumption remains below its pre-crisis level (–1.5% compared to Q4 2019), whereas it had exceeded it when restaurants were closed.
