Producer prices in the French industry: +1.6%
In September 2021, the industrial producer prices accelerated over a month (+1.6% after +0.8% in the previous month), both on the home market (+1.7% after +1.0%) and the foreign markets (+1.6% after +0.6%). Year on year, their increase reached 10.8% (after +9.5% in August 2021).
HOME MARKET: +1.7%
In September 2021, the industrial producer prices for the home market sped up over a month (+1.7% after +1.0%), driven up sharply by those of energy, while manufactured product prices rose by 0.6% (after +0.5%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices for the home market kept accelerating (+11.6% after +10.0% in August 2021 and +9.0 in July 2021).
Strong rise of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In September 2021, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water accelerated strongly over a month (+4.8% after +2.7% in the previous month). The prices of electricity production and trade increased by 5.1% (after +1.5%), driven by those on the wholesale market. The prices of trade services of gas through mains remained on an strong upward trend (+14.8% after +10.9%), in connection with a further increase in regulated tariffs and a demand far exceeding available stocks. The prices of steam and air conditioning supply services rose also sharply (+13.4% after +10.3%). Year on year, the rise in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water reached 21.9% in September 2021 (after +18.5% in the previous month).
Persistent rise of prices of the “other industrial products”
The prices of the “other industrial products” went up by 0.7% in September 2021 over a month (after +0.8%). Those of chemicals and chemical products accelerated (+2.4% after +1.8%), in line with raw material prices over the recent months. Furthermore, in line with the strong increases in steel and aluminium prices, those of basic metals continued to rise strongly (+2.6% after +2.4%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” carried on the acceleration that started at the beginning of 2021: +9.0% in September 2021 (after +8.2% in August 2021 and +7.3% in July 2021).
Rise of refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum rose by 3.3% in September 2021 over a month (after +0.4%). Over a year, they soared by 80.4% (after +61.6% in the previous month).

In September 2021, the food and beverage prices recovered very slightly over a month (+0.2% after –0.1%). They rose by 3.1% over a year (after +2.8%).
Rise of the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery
In September 2021, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were up by 0.4% over a month (after +0.1%), mainly due to those of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+0.5% after +0.4%). Year on year, they rose by 2.5% (after +2.4%).

In September 2021, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets accelerated over a month (+1.6% after +0.6%), driven up strongly by those of electricity, while the prices of manufactured products decelerated slightly (+0.4% after +0.6%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets rose by 9.4% (after +8.4% in the previous month).
The prices of the “other industrial products” decelerated over a month (+0.5% after +1.0%), especially those of basic metals (+1.3% after +3.5%) and of chemicals and chemical products (+0.5% after +1.2%). Year on year, the rise of the prices of the “other industrial products” reached 10.6% in September 2021 (after +9.9% in the previous month).
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products recovered over a month (+5.9% after –0.4%) and remained on a very strong upward trend over a year (+93.3% after +71.7%).
The prices of food and beverages rose over a month (+0.5% after +0.1%), driven up by the rebound of those of beverages (+1.0% after –0.6%). Over a year, they went up by 3.4% (after +2.7%).
The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery were virtually stable over a month (–0.1% after +0.6%) and rose by 2.2% over a year (after +2.3% in the previous month).
At last, the prices of transport equipment stabilized over a month (after +0.2%) and rose by 2.1% over a year (after +2.4%).

Import prices of industrial products: +2.8%
In September 2021, the import prices of industrial products accelerated sharply over a month (+2.8% after +1.1%), driven up strongly by those of gas, while those of manufactured products rose at a more moderate pace (+0.5% after +0.4%). Over a year, the import prices of industrial products continued to accelerate (+17.0% in September 2021 after +13.6% in August 2021 and +12.3% in July 2021).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products recovered over a month (+7.7% after –2.2%) and remained on a strong upward trend over a year (+82.4% after +56.4%).
On the other hand, the prices of the “other industrial products” kept decelerating over a month (+0.4% after +1.0% in August 2021 and +1.8% in July 2021). The prices of chemicals and chemical products slowed down sharply (+0.3% after +2.2%), as did those of basic metals (+0.4% after +1.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” went up by 12.6% (after +12.4% in the previous month).
The prices of transport equipment fell back over a month (–0.6% after +0.2%), especially those of motor vehicles (–1.6% after +0.7%), and slowed down over a year (+1.6% after +2.4%).
The prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery rose by 0.2% over a month (as in the previous month) and by 1.9% over a year (after +1.8%).
At last, the prices of food, beverages and tobacco recovered over a month (+0.4% after –0.3%), and went up sharply over a year (+4.3% after +4.1%).

The producer price indices in industry measure the change of producer prices of goods and services, linked to a given industrial activity and sold on the home market or on the foreign markets.
The import price indices of industrial products measure the change of transaction prices of goods and services purchased by economic agents established on French territory to non-resident agents.
Calculation method
They are calculated on the basis of the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise), which is operated by INSEE.
