Output in services up 0.4% in July 2021 Index of services production - July 2021
In July 2021, output in services continued to recover (+0.4%), after the very strong increase recorded in June (+7.8%). Ouput was thus almost back to its February 2020 level (last month before the start of the first lockdown), at −0.3% of it.
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In July 2021, output in services continued to recover (+0.4%), after the very strong increase recorded in June (+7.8%). Ouput was thus almost back to its February 2020 level (last month before the start of the first lockdown), at −0.3% of it.
In July 2021, contrasted evolutions depending on the sectors
In July 2021, output increased sharply again in accommodation and food service activities (+8.1% after +50.2%). This increase could be explained at least partially by the total lifting of the last curfew measures (June 20) which was effective for the first full month. Likewise, output continued to increase in the arts, entertainment and recreation (+8.0% after +48.5%). It recovered in administrative and support services activities (+2.0% after –0.2%) and increased in transportation and storage (+0.5% after +6.9%). On the other hand, it fell in professional, scientific and technical activities (−2.6% after +4.5%), in information-communication (−1.1% after +5.5%) and more moderately in real estate activities (–0.5% after +3.5%).
Output in services was close to its February 2020 level (−0.3%). The information-communication sectors (+10.1%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+2.1%) were above their level of February 2020. Output remained sharply down compared to February 2020 in arts, entertainment and recreation (–23.9%), and in a more moderate decline in administrative and support services activities (–3.9%), and accommodation and food service activities (−4.5%). In the latter sector, the decline remained significant in accommodation (−18.7%) deprived of part of its business and international customers, while output was close to its pre-crisis level in food and beverage service activities (−0.5%). Output was also moderately down in transportation and storage (−1.3% but −36.1% in air transport), and real estate activities (−1.3%).
