In June 2021, the number of business births for all enterprises rebounded (+0.8% after –4.1% in May seasonally and working-day adjusted). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased slightly (–0.2% after –7.4%) while conventionnal business births increased again (+2.6% after +2.1%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months increases strongly (+30.2%), notably due to the particulary low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020.

Increase in business births in accommodation and food service activities over one month

In June 2021, the number of business births increased in accomodation and food service activities (+14.9%), in education, human health and social work activities (+10.8%) and in manufacturing activities (+9.4%). On the other hand, the number of business births decreased in transport and storage activities (–19.8%).

Sharp increase in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months (April to June) increased sharply in comparison with the same months one year ago (+59.3%). This particularly strong increase is explained by the high number of busines births in the first quarter of 2021 but above all by the abnormally low number of business births in the first quarter of 2020 due to the first lockdown. Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations went up sharply (+53.1%), as well as companies’s births (+83.9%) and conventionnal sole proprietorships’ births (+38.8%).

Business support activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall rise (+18,600 business births, which comes to a contribution of +11.7 points)*. Within it, the strongest increase was in business and other management consultancy activities (+4,200 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago).

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up (+30.2%), notably due to the particulary low number of business births during the first lockdown in 2020. Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations increased more strongly (+34.4%) than companies’ births (+30.0%), and sole proprietorships’ births (+6.0%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Nearly two business births out of three are micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations

In June 2021, in raw data, the share of micro-entrepreneurs’ in the businesses births over the last twelve months decreased slightly and represents 65.1%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in May 2021 has been lowered by 0.1 points to –4.1% instead of –4.0%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
