The industrial producer prices rose by 0.4% in May 2021 (after –0.4%): the prices for the home market recovered (+0.5% after –0.8%) while those for the foreign markets slowed down (+0.3% after +0.7%). Year on year, the industrial producer prices kept rising strongly (+6.6% after +6.0%), as a consequence of the low prices observed in the spring of 2020 in connection with the health crisis but also of the recent surges in some raw material prices due to the economic recovery.

Producer prices in French industry: +0.4%
The industrial producer prices rose by 0.4% in May 2021 (after –0.4%): the prices for the home market recovered (+0.5% after –0.8%) while those for the foreign markets slowed down (+0.3% after +0.7%). HOME MARKET: +0.5%
The industrial producer prices for the home market recovered in May 2021 (+0.5% after –0.8%). Manufactured product prices sped up slightly (+0.8% after +0.6%) while those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water remained down. Year on year, the industrial producer prices for the home market rose by 7.2% in May 2021 (after +6.7%).
Slight decline in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In May 2021, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water fell by 0.4% (after –4.9%). Electricity production and trade prices kept decreasing in accordance with their seasonal pattern (–2.8% after –2.5%). On the contrary, those of trade services of gas through mains recovered sharply (+6.7% after –0.4%). Year on year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water rose by 11.0% (after +10.3%).
Persistent dynamism of prices of the “other industrial products”
The prices of the “other industrial products” remained very dynamic in May 2021 (+0.9% after +1.0%), mainly due to rises in raw material prices. The prices of chemicals and chemical products kept rising strongly (+2.7% after +2.8%), as did those of basic metals (+2.2% after +2.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” kept speeding up in May 2021 (+5.2% after +4.0% and +2.6%).
Rise in food and beverage prices
In May 2021, the food and beverage prices rose by 0.6% (after +0.4%), driven up by those of processed and preserved meat (+1.8%, as in the previous month) and of dairy and cheese products (+0.8% after +0.7%). Year on year, the food and beverage prices sped up sharply (+2.4% after +1.5%).
Moderate increase in refined petroleum product prices over a month
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products recovered in May 2021 over a month (+3.4% after –0.9%). Over a year, they kept rising strongly (+92.5% after +128.7%).

In May 2021, the prices of transport equipment rose slightly over a month (+0.3% after +0.1%), driven up by those of motor vehicles (+0.6% after +0.1%). Over a year, they grew by 2.8% (after +2.6%).
Virtual stability of the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery
In May 2021, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery remained virtually stable over a month (+0.1%, as in the previous month) and rose by 1.1% over a year (after +1.2%).

In May 2021, the export producer prices for the whole industry slowed down (+0.3% after +0.7%), as did those of manufactured prices (+0.4% after +0.5%). Nevertheless, they kept speeding up over a year (+5.4% after +4.8% and +3.2%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” remained on an upward trend over a month (+1.0% after +1.3%), driven up by those of basic metals (+3.3% after +3.5%) and of chemicals and chemical products (+1.4% after +1.3%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” kept speeding up in May 2021 (+7.8% after +5.9% and +3.9%).
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products went on the rise again over a month (+3.8% after +0.1%) and remained very dynamic over a year (+102.3% after +121.7%).
On the contrary, transport equipment prices decreased in May 2021 over a month (–0.4% after –0.2%) and over a year (–2.0% after –1.8%).

Import price indices of industrial products: +1.5%
In May 2021, the import prices of industrial products sped up sharply (+1.5% after +0.9%), driven up by those of manufactured products (+0.9% after +0.7%) and of unrefined hydrocarbons. Over a year, they took off: +10.5% (after +9.1% in the previous month).
The prices of the “other industrial products” rose by 1.2% over a month (as in the previous month), due to the rise in raw material prices (steel, non-ferrous metals, oil, wood…). The prices kept rising strongly in particular for basic metals (+4.1% after +3.8%) and for chemicals and chemical products (+1.8% after +2.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” kept speeding up: +7.9% (after +5.8% and +4.0%).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products rose by 4.0% over a month (after +0.8%) and by 92.0% over a year (after +84.9%).
Transport equipment prices increased over a month (+0.5% after a stability), driven by those of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+0.7% after +0.1%). Over a year, they sped up (+1.6% after +1.2%).
At last, the prices of food products, beverages and tobacco rose by 0.5% over a month (after +0.8%) and by 4.0% over a year (after +3.3%).

Definition
The producer price indices in industry measure the change of producer prices of goods and services, linked to a given industrial activity and sold on the home market or on the foreign markets.
The import price indices of industrial products measure the change of transaction prices of goods and services purchased by economic agents established on French territory to non-resident agents.
Calculation method
They are calculated on the basis of the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise), which is operated by INSEE.

Definition
The producer price indices in industry measure the change of producer prices of goods and services, linked to a given industrial activity and sold on the home market or on the foreign markets.
The import price indices of industrial products measure the change of transaction prices of goods and services purchased by economic agents established on French territory to non-resident agents.
Calculation method
They are calculated on the basis of the results of the survey « Observation of prices in industry and services » (Opise), which is operated by INSEE.
