26 February 2021 · n° 056In December 2020, services output bounced back (+5.6%) but remained below its February
2020 level (−5.3%) Index of services production - December 2020
In December 2020, services output bounced (+5.6% after −5.5% in November), in connection with the easing in the measures taken to contain the epidemic. Compared with February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), however, it remained sharply down (−5.3%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In December 2020, services output bounced (+5.6% after −5.5% in November), in connection with the easing in the measures taken to contain the epidemic. Compared with February 2020 (last month before the first lockdown), however, it remained sharply down (−5.3%).
In December 2020, output was up for most sectors
In December 2020, output increased markedly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+7.0% after –2.1%). Due to the easing in December of measures related to the health situation, it bounced back strongly in other service activities (+ 67.5% after –33.3%) which includes for example hairdressing activities, and in the accommodation and food services activities (+ 15.9% after –46.1%). Output increased greatly in real estate activities (+11.0% after –6.6%), and in information and communication (+4.6% after + 0.1%) and more moderately in administrative and business service activities (+ 0.9% after + 1.0%). Conversely, output kept on falling in arts, entertainment and recreation (–1.2% after –12.0%), and in transportation and storage (−2.0% after −0.6%).
Output in services stood at a lower level (−5.3%) than in February 2020, in particular in accommodation and food services activities (−52.8%), arts, entertainment and recreation (−41.1%), transportation and storage (−10.1%) with a collapse in air transport (−52.3%). The decline was more moderate in administrative and business service activities (–3.8%) and real estate activities (–1.4%). Compared with February, output was up in information and communication (+8.1%) and in specialised , scientific and technical activities (+7,6%).
