8 January 2021 · n° 004In November 2020, manufacturing output increased again (+0.5%) Industrial production index - November 2020
In November 2020, output increased again in the manufacturing industry (+0.5%, after +0.8%) while it decreased in the whole industry (−0.9%, after +1.9%). Compared to February (the last month before the beginning of the first general lockdown), output remained significantly lower in the manufacturing industry (−4.2%), as well as in the whole industry (−4.1%).
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

graphiqueMonthly Industrial Production Indices
In November 2020, diverging trends from one activity to another
In November, output decreased sharply in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−8.5% after +8.3%) and more moderately in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−3.3% after +11.8%). Conversely, output continued to rise in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.4% after +0.6%). Output edged up in the manufacture of transport equipment (+1.6% after −1.2%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.8% after −0.3%) and it was virtually stable in “other manufacturing” (+0.1% after +1.4%).
In November, output yet remained below its February level in most industrial activities. It slumped in the manufacture of transport equipment (−12.0%), especially in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (−17.6%). Compared to February 2020, output also dropped in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−4.3%) and in “other manufacturing” (−3.0%). In this activity, it fell sharply in the manufacturing of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−12.1%) and it increased in pharmaceuticals (+3.9%) and in chemicals (+2.4%).
