Please note:

All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).

In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

In October 2020, output increased in the majority of industrial activities

In October, output bounced back in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+7.9% after −2.7%). It went on increasing in “other manufacturing” (+1.2% after +1.1%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.0% after +3.9%) and it grew up strongly again in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+13.0% after +19.5%). However output of transport equipment fell back (−2.7% after +9.2%) and output of food products and beverages decreased slightly (−0.3% after a virtual stability).

In October, output yet remained below its February level in most industrial activities. It plummeted in the manufacture of transport equipment (−14.0%): in this activity, output was close to return to its first pre-lockdown level in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi−trailers (−1.4%), whereas it stood at a level sharply below that of February in the manufacture of “other transport equipment” (−23.7%). Compared to February 2020, output also declined in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−6.0%), especially in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−10.4%). Conversely, output was up compared to February in pharmaceuticals (+8.7%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+5.1%).
