In September 2020 output in services kept recovering (+2.9% after +4.3% in August). Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−4.5%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of services production change is based mostly on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are seasonaly and working day adjusted (SA−WDA).
In September 2020 output in services kept recovering (+2.9% after +4.3% in August). Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−4.5%).
In September 2020, output increased in a majority of sectors
In September 2020, output sped up in real estate activites (+16.2% after +8.8% in august), in professional, scientific and technical activities (+5.6% after +2.6%) and in administrative and support service activities (+6.4% after +3.3%). It recovered in transportation and storage (+1.7% after −2.1%). By contrast, output fell in information and communication (−4.5% after +4.5%) and in accommodation and food service activities (−5.7% after +11.6%). In this sector, the decline was particularly important in accommodation (−14.9% after +19.8%), it was less pronounced in food and beverages service activities (−3.6% after +9.9%). After a strong growth in August, production fell slightly in arts, entertainment and recreation (−0.1% after +18.7%).
Compared to February, output in services was still down sharply (−4.5%) notably in administrative and support service activities (−8.1%), transportation and storage (−9.0%), accommodation and food service activities (−13.6%) especially for accommodation activity (−30.9%), and in arts, entertainment and recreation (−21.2%). It was up compared to February in real estate activities and close to its February level in the other major sectors.

Output also fell over a year
In services, output in the third quarter was 9.4% lower than in the third quarter of 2019.Output fell sharply in administrative and support service activities (−13.8%) and in transportation and storage (−14.6%), with a collapse in air transport (−57.2%). Output fell also sharply in arts, entertainment and recreation (−29.1%) and accommodation and food services activities (−15.6%). Output fell to a lesser extent in professional, scientific and technical activities (−5.8%), real estate activities (−1.5%) and in information and communication (−1.0%).
Revisions
The month-on-month percentage change of the index of services production in August 2020 has been revised upwards by 0.2 points. Initially published at +4.1%, it is now evaluated at +4.3%.
