In September 2020, the sales volume in trade declined (−2.1%) after a rise in August (+1.9%). Its level was higher than before the first lockdown, for the fourth consecutive month (+1.5% in September compared to February).
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
In September 2020, the sales volume in trade declined (−2.1%) after a rise in August (+1.9%). Its level was higher than before the first lockdown, for the fourth consecutive month (+1.5% in September compared to February).
In September 2020, the sales volume in trade fell back
In September, the sales volume in retail trade decreased (−3.6% after +7.0% in August). It decreased in all sectors: specialised stores (−4.4% after +6.7% in August), non-specialised stores (−2.7% after +4.7%), and retail trade not in stores (−2.4% after +18.6%) - where the sales volume remained at a sharply higher level than before the first lockdown (+11.7% compared to February). Among specialised stores, it decreased in all subsections, especially in those which seem to have benefited in August from the shift in the dates of the summer sales: retail sale of other goods (clothing, shoes etc.: −4.0% after +9.3%) and retail sale of other household equipment (excluding information and communication equipment: −3.5% after +5.6%). The sales volume dwindled in the subsection of automotive fuel (−4.0% after +2.1% in August).
The sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell in September (−4.0% after +0.4% in August). It decreased in all sectors, particularly in the sale of motor vehicles (−4.2% in September after −1.6% in August). In this sector, the sales volume remained significantly higher than before the first lockdown (+8.5% compared to February).
In September, the sales volume in wholesale trade kept falling (−0.8% after −0.3% in August). The sales volume decreased in other specialised wholesale (fuels, wood, chemical products etc.: −3.4% after +3.0%) and fell again sharply in information and communication equipment (−7.1% after −9.8%).
Forecast
According to the early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should increase in October 2020 (+2.9%). For the period running from August to October, it should rise by 4.9% compared to the same period one year earlier.

The sales volume of the past three months increased by 1.8% over a year
The turnover of the third quarter in overall trade increased by 1.8% compared to the same quarter one year earlier. It rose in retail trade (+3.3%), in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+6.7%), while it fell slightly in wholesale trade (−0.2%). Within retail trade, it grew in specialised stores (+3.8%), in non-specialised stores (+1.8%) and in retail trade not in stores (+6.0%).
Revisions
The percentage change in the sales volume of overall trade in August 2020 has been slightly revised downwards, at +1.9% instead of +2.0% initially published.
