graphiqueTotal consumption of goods
Manufactured goods: clear decrease
In September, manufactured good consumption decreased sharply (–6.8% after +3.5% in August), mainly due to a decrease in textile-clothing spending (–15.9% after +22.0%). The decline in spending on durable goods intensified (–5.1% after –1.5%). Manufactured good purchases decreased (–3.0% after +1.3% in August and –2.9% in July).
Over the whole third quarter 2020, manufactured good consumption bounced back markedly (+38.9% after –11.7% in the second quarter), exceeding clearly its level of the third quarter 2020 (+4.3%).
Durables: further decline
In September, durable good spending fell (–5.1%) for the third consecutive month, due to the further decline in the consumption of transport equipment (–6.0% after –5.6%). In addition, housing equipment purchases (household appliances, electronics) decreased sharply (–5.8% after +6.3%). These remain higher 9.5% above their February 2020 level.
Textile-clothing: aftermath of the sharp increase in August
Textile-clothing spending decreased very strongly in September (–15.9% after +22.0% in August), by aftermath of the sharp increase in August. This aftermath was especially due to the postponement of the summer sales dates, set this year from July 15 to August 11. Textile-clothing spending in September stayed 2.4% above their February level.
Other engineered goods: decrease
In September, the consumption of "other manufactured goods" decline (–3.0% after +1.3%), due to the decrease in perfume sales.

Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)
Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
