2020- n° 283In August 2020, services output sped up (+4.1%) but remained below its February level
(−7.2%) Index of services production - August 2020
In August 2020 output in services kept recovering (+4.1% after +2.7% in July). Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−7.2%).
The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month−to−month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of index of services production is based in particular on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are seasonaly and working day adjusted (SA−WDA).
In August 2020 output in services kept recovering (+4.1% after +2.7% in July). Compared to February, output was still down sharply (−7.2%).
In August 2020, output increased in most sectors
In August 2020, output kept increasing strongly in accommodation and food service activities (+12.7% after +24.7%) and in arts, entertainment and recreation (+18.2% after +38.2%). It bounced back in real estate activities (+9.5% after −5.8%), in information-communication (+3.5% after −1.2%) and in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+2.4% after −5.9%). It kept increasing in administrative and business support activities (+3.2% after +3.9%). In contrast, output fell back in transportation and storage (−2.8% after +13.4%).
Compared to February, output in services was still down sharply (−7.2%) notably in administrative and business support activities (−14.5%), transportation and storage (−10.9%), specialised, scientific and technical activities (−6.3%), arts, entertainment and recreation (−20.9%) and accommodation and food service activities (−8.1%). In the latter, accommodation activity was still sharply impacted (−18.7%), while production in food and beverage service activities got closer of its February level (−5.2%). Information-communication was the only large section where output exceeded its February level (+3.3%).
