In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

In August 2020, the sales volume in trade bounced back (+2.0%) after a slight fall in July (−0.3%). Since June, its level is higher than before the general lockdown (+3.7% in August compared to February).

In August 2020, the sales volume in trade bounced back

In August, the sales volume in retail trade recovered strongly (+7.1% after −3.3% in July). This rebound concerned all sectors: specialised stores (+6.9% after −2.3% in July), non-specialised stores (+4.7% after −1.2%) and retail trade not in stores (+18.6% after −16.4%). Among specialised stores, the rise came mainly from retail sale of other goods (clothing, shoes etc.: +9.9% after −2.5%) and retail sale of other household equipment (excluding information and communication equipment: +5.4% after −9.4%). Part of this increase (in particular for clothing-shoes) could be explained by the date shift of the summer sales. The subsection of automotive fuel slowed down (+2.2%) after the strong rise observed in June and July (respectively +28.2% and +15.5%). It almost reached its pre-lockdown level (−0.3% compared to February).

In August, the sales volume in wholesale trade was virtually stable (−0.1%), following a slight increase in July (+0.3%). The sales volume bounced back in wholesale of household goods (+5.2% after −1.7%) and fell back in information and communication equipment (−10.0% after +11.3%).

In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, the sales volume slowed down in August (+0.2% after +3.8% in July). Its level remained significantly higher than before the general lockdown (+12.0% compared to February). However, sale of motor vehicles dwindled (−1.6%) after the strong progress observed in June and July (respectively +55% and +7.2%).

Forecast

According to the early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should decrease in September 2020 (−4.6%). From July to September, it should increase by 3.1% compared to the same period one year earlier.
