In September 2020, the price of oil fell back Prices of oil and raw material imports - September 2020

In September 2020, the prices of oil in euros fell back (−8.3% after +0.3%). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) increased again (+2.3% after +2.1%), because the prices of industrial raw materials increased for the fifth month in a row (+1.9% after +4.4%) and the prices of raw food materials recovered (+2.6% after −0.4%).

Oil prices fell back

In September 2020, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros fell back (−8.3% after +0.3%) to an average of €35 per barrel. However, the decrease in dollars was similar (−8.6% after +3.5%), a bit more marked.

Industrial commodity prices increased for the fifth month in a row

In September 2020, the prices of industrial raw materials increased again (+1.9% after +4.4%) like those of mineral materials (+1.9% after +5.4%). In fact, the prices of ferrous metals increased again (+2.8% after +8.1%) as well as those non ferrous metals (+1.9% after +2.3%). However, the prices of precious metals fell back (−2.2% after +9.9%). The prices of agricultural raw materials recovered (+1.9% after −1.4%) as those of sawn softwood (+0.3% after −3.1%), natural textile fibres (+1.2% after −4.4%) and pulp (+0,3 % after −3.1%). The price of hide accelerated (+11.2% after +5.1%). Conversely, the price of natural rubber eased (+4.9% after +6.8%) and the price of tropical wood fell back (−0.7% after +0.7%).

Food commodity prices recovered

In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials recovered (+2.6% after −0.4%) mainly because of oil seeds and vegetable (+5.7% after −0.3%) cereals (+4.5% after −0.5%), meats (+7.0% after −0.3%). The prices of tropical foodstuffs increased less than in August (+2.6% after +8.7%). The price of seafood products decreased again (−3.0% after −8.6%) and the price of sugar fell back (−2.4% after +4.4%).

Petroleum products: prices of petroleum are quotations from the Rotterdam market which supplies European market.

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
