In September 2020, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets dropped by 0.5% over a month, after +0.2% in August.

Excluding hyper and supermarkets, the prices of frequently purchased goods were stable after +0.1% the previous month.

Considering all kinds of stores, they fall by 0.3% over a month, after +0.2% in August.

Year on year, prices in hyper and supermarkets slowed down

Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets slowed down since the beginning of the year, with the exception of a temporary jump in April : +0.1% in September, after +0.4% in August and +1.1% in March. In large and predominantly food stores, the prices were less dynamic than in previous months: +0.2% in September after +0.5% in August, +0.6% in July and +1.1% in March.

In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose by 0.8% year on year, at the same pace as in August. Their increase remained more pronounced than in hyper and supermarkets whereas this was not the case in March (+0.9% and +1.1%, respectively in other kinds of stores and hyper and supermarkets).

Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods slowed down slightly year on year: +0.4% in September after +0.5% in August, +0.6% in July and +1.1% in March.

Over a month, drop in food prices in hyper and supermarkets

The prices of food (excluding fresh produces) sold in hyper and supermarkets dropped in September: –0.4% over a month after +0.1% in August. Year on year, their prices slowed down for the fifth consecutive month: +0.4% in September, after +0,6% in August and +1.7% in April .

This fall in prices over a month resulted from lower prices in meat, beverages and other food products.

After an increase in August (+0.3%), the prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets decreased in September (–0.4%). Year on year, their growth was stable: +1.8% in September and August.

Prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets fell in September (–0.4%) after rising in the previous month (+0.2%). Year on year, the prices of these products were less dynamic than the previous month: +0.3% in September after +0.6% in August.

The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) dropped in September (–0.4% after being stable in August). Year on year, they decreased slightly: –0.1%, after +0.1% the previous month.

Decrease in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets

In September, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets dropped: –1.1% over a month, after +0.4% in August and +0.5% in July. Year on year, the decline in the prices of these products accelerated: –1.6% in September after –0.7% in August.
