In July 2020, the sales volume in overall trade declined slightly (−0.5%) after the strong progress observed in May and June (respectively +35.0% and +15.4%). It remained at a slightly higher level than before the general lockdown (+1.4% compared to February).

In July 2020, the sales volume in overall trade declined slightly (−0.5%) after the strong progress observed in May and June (respectively +35.0% and +15.4%). It remained at a slightly higher level than before the general lockdown (+1.4% compared to February).

In July 2020, the sales volume in overall trade fell back slightly

In July, the sales volume in retail trade dwindled (−3.3% after +8.4% in June). In retail trade not in stores, the sales volume fell back strongly (−17.3% after +3.5% in June). In specialised stores, the sales volume decreased more modestly (−2.2% after +15.8% in June). Among specialised stores, the sales volume in retail sale of other goods (excluding information and communication equipment) fell back strongly (−9.2% after +18.9% in June), but remained at a much higher level than before the start of the general lockdown (+10.5% compared to February). The subsection of automotive fuel continued to recover (+14.4% after +28.2% in June), and almost reached its pre-lockdown level (−3.6% compared to February). In non-specialised stores, the sales volume decreased slightly (−0.9% after a stability in June).

In July, the sales volume in wholesale was virtually stable after a significant rise in June (−0.1% after +13.2%). It remained close to its pre-lockdown level (+0.1% compared to February). The sales volume accelerated in information and communication equipment (+13.1% after +6.2% in June) and fell back in other machinery, equipment and supplies (−3.1% after +15.5%).

In trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, the sales volume increased more moderately than in June (+3.8% after +45.9%). Its level is 11.7% higher than in February.

Forecast

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should increase in August 2020 (+6.2%). From June to August, it should increase by 2.9% compared to the same period one year earlier.

The sales volume declined by 2.6% over a year

The turnover of the past three months (May to July) in overall trade decreased (−2.6%) compared to the same period one year earlier. It decreased in wholesale trade (−3.5%), in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−4.8%) and was virtually stable in retail trade (+0.1%). Within retail trade, it rose both in retail trade not in stores (+8.2%) and in non-specialised stores (+0.8%), whereas it fell in specialised stores (−1.7%).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in June 2020 has been revised upwards, at +15.4% instead of +15.2% initially published.
