The producer prices in French industry stabilized in August 2020 (after +0.4% in July): those for the French market were virtually stable (+0.1% after +0.4%) while those for the foreign markets fell slightly (–0.3% after +0.4%). Year on year, the producer prices in French industry kept decreasing by 2.1% in August 2020 (like in the previous month).

Producer prices in French industry: stability in August 2020
The producer prices in French industry stabilized in August 2020 (after +0.4% in July): those for the French market were virtually stable (+0.1% after +0.4%) while those for the foreign markets fell slightly (–0.3% after +0.4%). Year on year, the producer prices in French industry kept decreasing by 2.1% in August 2020 (like in the previous month).
FRENCH MARKET: +0.1%
The French producer prices in industry for the French market were virtually stable in August 2020 (+0.1% after +0.4%): the rise in the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water was almost offset by the fall in those of manufactured products (–0.2% after +0.3%). Year on year, the French producer prices in industry for the French market declined by 2.5% in August 2020 (like in the previous month).
New rise in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In August 2020, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water kept growing (+0.8% after +0.9%), driven up by the prices of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (+1.2% after +1.3%). The prices of electricity production and trade increased in particular by 1.3% (after +2.1%), as a result of a rising demand and limited means of production. The prices of trade services of gas through mains rebounded also by 1.7% (after –0.5%), following a rise in regulated rates. Year on year, the decline in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water strengthened in August 2020 (–2.6% after –2.0%).
Moderate fall in refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products fell back slightly in August 2020 over a month (–3.0% after +8.8%) and remained sharply down over a year (–33.9% after –35.5%).

Fall in food and beverage prices
In August 2020, the food and beverage prices decreased by 0.3% over a month (after +0.1%), especially those of meat and meat products (–0.7% after +0.1%). Year on year, the food and beverage prices fell by 0.3% (after +0.1%), breaking with the upward trend observed since September 2018.
Stability in prices of the “other industrial products”
In August 2020, the prices of the “other industrial products” were stable (like in the previous month). The chemical product prices decreased slightly (–0.4% after +1.0%). On the contrary, those of rubber and plastics products recovered (+0.5% after –0.5%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” decreased by 1.9% in August 2020 (like in the previous month).

FOREIGN MARKETS: –0.3%
In August 2020, the producer prices of French industrial products for foreign markets fell by 0.3% (after +0.4%), driven down by the prices of manufactured products (–0.3% after +0.1%). Year on year, they declined by 1.4% (after –1.3%).
The export prices of transport equipment kept declining in August 2020 over a month (–1.3% after –0.6%), mainly those of aeronautics. Year on year, they decelerated sharply (+0.7% after +2.6%).
The export prices of refined petroleum products slowed down in August 2020 over a month (+8.4% after +14.7%) and kept declining strongly over a year (–31.6% after –39.8%).
In August 2020, the export prices of food products and beverages fell again (–0.3% after –0.4%), especially those of beverages (–0.6% after –1.0%) and those of meat and meat products (–1.1% after –1.2%). Year on year, the prices of food products and beverages fell back also when they are sold on the foreign markets (–0.6% after +0.2%).
At last, the export prices of the “other industrial products” stabilized in August 2020 (after +0.3%). The prices of chemical products grew slightly (+0.6% after +2.4%), like those of basic metals (+0.3% after –1.0%) while the prices of pharmaceutical products kept decreasing (–1.0% after –0.4%). Year on year, the export prices of the “other industrial products” decreased by 1.9% (after –2.2%).

Import price indices of industrial products: –0.1%
The import prices of industrial products stabilized in August 2020 (–0.1% after +0.7% in the previous month). The import prices of manufactured products fell slightly (–0.2% after +0.3%) while those of hydrocarbons increased moderately. Year on year, the import prices of industrial products declined by 3.5% (after –3.9% in the previous month).
In August 2020, the import prices for coke and refined petroleum products fell back over a month (–3.5% after +8.6%) and declined by 35.4% over a year (after –35.7%).
The import prices of transport equipment declined by 0.5% in August 2020 (after a stability in the previous month), mainly those of motor vehicles (–0.9% after +0.2%). Year on year, the import prices of transport equipment slowed down sharply (+0.2% after +0.7%).
The import prices of “other industrial products” remained virtually stable in August 2020 (+0.1% like in the two previous month). The import wearing apparel prices grew again (+1.6% after +2.4%), due to the renewal of collections. On the contrary, the import prices of chemical products remained down (–0.5% after –0.4%). Year on year, the import prices of “other industrial products” declined by 1.5% (after –1.7%).
At last, the import prices of food, beverages and tobacco decreased in August by 0.3% over a month (after +0.4%) and by 0.4% over a year (like in the previous month).
