In August 2020, the prices of oil in euros were virtually stable (+0.3% after +5.6% in July). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) accelerated (+2.1% after +0.4%), because the prices of industrial raw materials increased for the fourth month in a row (+4.4% after +2.8%). However, the prices of raw food materials decreased again (−0.4% after −2.0%).
Since last month, fioul data sets 010002073 and 010002074 are no longer released by our data furnisher and have been replaced by similar data sets 010751333, 010751334 and 010751335, completely linked.

Oil prices were virtually stable
In August 2020, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros were virtually stable (+0.3% after 5.6%) to an average of €38 per barrel. However, the price increased in dollars (+3.5% after +7.5%), because the euro appreciated in August.

Industrial commodity prices increased for the fourth month in a row
In August 2020, the prices of industrial raw materials increased again (+4.4% after +2.8%) like those of mineral materials (+5.4% after +3.6%). In fact, the prices of ferrous metals has risen, following iron ore (+8.1% after +1.8%). The price of iron ore was lifted by the demand recover and struggles Covid19 related in producer countries. The prices of precious metals accelerated too (+9.9% after +6.6%) but those of non ferrous metals eased (+2.3% after +4.8%). The prices of agricultural raw materials decreased again (−1.4% after −1.5%) as those of sawn softwood (−3.1% after −1.8%), natural textile fibres (−4.4% after −0.4%) and pulp (−3.1% after −2.4%). Conversely, the price of natural rubber accelerated (+6.8% after +1.2%) just like the price of hide (+5.1% after +0.3%). The price of tropical wood rebounded (+0.7% after −0.5%)

Food commodity prices decreased again
In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials decreased again (−0.4% after −2.0%) mainly because of oil seeds and vegetable (−0.3% after +1.7%) cereals (−0.5% after −6.5%), meats (−0.3% after −8.3%) and seafood products (−8.6% after−0.2%). However, the prices of tropical foodstuffs recovered (+8.7% after −0.3%) like the price of sugar (+4.4% after −0.3%).

Crude oil: from 1986, the price of Brent gradually established as a representative reference price of European supplies.
Petroleum products: prices of petroleum are quotations from the Rotterdam market which supplies European market.
Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
