Warning

The indices presented here generally reflect well the magnitude of the shocks on activity in recent months, but month-to-month variations in certain specific sectors may possibly suffer from lags compared to activity. Indeed, the measurement of index of services production is based in particular on invoicing computed from VAT declarations which may in some cases be lagged, as for example in the case of employment activities (temporary employment).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).

In June 2020, following the progressive lifting of containment measures, output in services recovered again (+11.8% after +1.7% in May). Compared to February, the output remained in a sharp withdrawal (−13.6%).

In June 2020, the output increased in all sections

In June 2020, the output went up strongly again in accommodation and food service activities (+130.3% after +56.7% in May). It bounced back in business support activities (+5.3% after −0.9%): it increased again in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+6.9% after +2.5%) and rebounded in administrative and business support activities (+2.8% after −5.9%). In those two sectors, scientific research and development, legal and accounting activities, other professional, scientific and technical activities or services to building and landscape activities were close to their usual level (before containment), whereas advertising and market research or travel agency, tour operator remained in sharp decline. In employment activities; the output decreased again, due to lagged invoicing of wages in the turnover of temporary work companies. The output bounced back in information and communication (+8.2% after −3.5%), notably in computer programming, telecommunications and information services. It also recovered in transportation and storage (+11.8% after −9.0%). It grew again in household services (+17.1% after +38.5%) but was still far from the usual level (before containment).

Compared to February, output in services remained in a sharp withdrawal (−13.6%), notably in accommodation and food service activities (−36.5%), in transportation and storage (−19.7%), in arts, entertainment and recreation (−52.5%), in administrative and business support activities (−19,9%) and in other personal services (−12.1%). In specialised, scientific and technical activities (−3.3%), the output decreased slightly compared to the rest of the services. Information and communication was the only big sector where the output in June exceeded February (+0.8%).

  • Note : given the discrepancies that may exist between the use of temporary employment and the invoices used to establish production indices, the evolution of output observed in the last two months in the sector of employment activities does not necessarily reflect well the evolution of activity over this period in the current particular circumstances.
